Valentine seems to be the only
junior normal where the teachers
try horseback exercise. The pure
air and great stretches of country
constantly tempt one to outdoor
exercise.
If anyone has a doubt about the
ability of Judge Walcott to make
first class coffee and prepare de-

him as the host in a camp supper

Lean are ready to give the strong-
j est testimonials for the Judge ,
either as a royal entertainer or as
I a first class chef.
Three judges from the Bristol
household passed on the merits of
the medal contestants in a rural
district last Eriday evening. Miss
Rector of Valentine won first
place. ,
Misses Dora and Francis.Grewe
leave this week for an all summer
trip to the Pacific coast. They ;
will visit scenes of interest and '
I stay some time at the Seattle ex-
position.
Miss Hunter and Miss Searby
are having a ' great debate. One
declares that a person born deaf I
can never learn to talk. It is I
hoped . , thc dispute will be settled
peaceably. : ,
Superintendent Bowen goes to I '
Atkinson to give the 4th of July !
speech. Since this is to be on
July 3 , it is believed , he will re
cover by J ul.y 5th sufficiently to I

care for his classes.
The Fourth of July is to be
quite generally celebrated on the
third in Cherry and surrounding
counties. Many normalites will
go home Friday evening and re
turn in . time for school Monday
morning.
Friday afternoon at the close of
the afternoon program Mr. Wil-
son headed an excursion to the
steam shovel. Primarily , the trip
i wa3 for the geography class but
many others went and aM enjoyed
the sight.
Again the combined forces of
skillful fishermen at the Bristol
home have furnished fried fish for
an appreciative group of boarders.
A trio of normalites , inspired by
the great success of three ardent
followers of Izaak Walton , sallied
forth early one morning and re
turned with eleven bass which the
hostess placed before her guests

Effie Carlson has left for a sum-
mer's trip through the central and
eastern parts of the United States
and will spend a few weeks with
relatives and friends in picturesque
parts of Pennsylvania.
The Parland-Newhall Company
next Wednesday evening will be
the r only remaining number of the
entertainments under the auspices
of the junior normal. No one
who enjoys first class vocal or in-
I strumental music can afford to
miss this treat. Their marvelous
I
bell ringing specialties are alone
worth the price of admission.
! Supt. Bettenga gave a domon-
! , stration of the force of the electric
current , as developed by the voltz ,
Thursday morning at the chapel
hour. All were much pleased with
the experiment. Some of the boys
called the apparatus "sparking
machine" and have begun to make
drawings and specifications of it ,
evidently ' thinking that they could
make some good use ' of it.
As heard in the class : Mr. Wil-
son-I have a friend who has two
daughters , one has kindergarten
training and the other has not. In
what way is the one with training
better off than her sister ?
Mr. : McDonald-Is she married ?
Mr. W. ' - No , I hardly think so.
Why ?
Mr. Me. - Oh , I thought if she
is , she could teach her own chil-
dren. '
, \
Some of the boys in the normal
are wondering what will happen :
next. One of the best of the I
school ma'ams has captured a very
capable young man and gone off
with him to set up a home , and a
few days ago a young teacher was
seen standing resolutely by the
track just "west of the depot.
When the train came in the engi-
neer was compelled to stop and as
he alighted he handed over a roll
of bills which seemed to be all he

Valentine 3.1.3f ; Ft. Robinsou 2-7-14
The Valentine baseball boys
matched their might'with the fast
Fort Robinson team the fore part
of the week in a series of three
. games. The Sunday ( first ) game :
was an extra inning contest of the ' .
classy order and the locals suc-
ceeded in pulling off a brilliant
victory after 12 innings of snappy
playing. The game was a pitch-
er's battle , in which Grimes , . the
local slab artist , had a shade the
best of it. The excitement never
flagged from the cry "play ball'J
until the last man had been tagged.
Our boys put up a fine exhibition
of baseball and they are to be con-
gratulated upon their splendid
victory. ,
We hesitate to mention the last
two games , for it sort of strikes
discord in our gentler nature. It
seems that our boys couldn't stand
prosperity , for in the last end of
the series they suffered two in-
glorious defeats. A little dumb .
playing , coupled with some dis
' I
astrous errors , put the locals to
the bad in each game. Hard luck
. and inability to hit the ball when
. hits meant runs was a vital factor
i in their defeat. On the other hand
I
the soldier boys played in horse
shoes , picked their hits in bunches
and had a little merry-go-round
all their own way.
Long Pine comes today for a
game with the home team and we
believe the Ft. Robinson series
has given our boys sufficient ex-
perience to warrant a good game.
