Many vital , things lie between you and a vote.-Ainsworth Star Journal. The Democratic Duty. Editor Mark Murry of the Pen- i . der Times compresses a big arg . ument 4 into a few words when he - says : . "If the senators of the United States represent correctly prin- ciples of the two great political parties of this country I don't know whether : 1 am a democrat or not. To observe their antics one cannot help wishing that' W. J. Bryan were down there to elim- , inate a few of the kinks that are so prominent and nauseating. Never ought the election of sen- ators by a direct vote of the people appeal so to the voters as now. " The senators do not represent . I the principles of their party : Especially are a number of the "democratic" senators misrep- J , resentative of the democratic party. - \ _ , -Thr . , ; , . ) . . - . , . . ' . . . . ' " = - - - " : j When the l.umbpr ! schedule came before the senates ; for exaijipje , there were . only ten teal ! democrats i there to vote for free lumber , which was a specific pledge of the Denver platform. The senators , calling themselves democrats , who voted against free lumber , be- trayed their party. So did those who voted with the steel trust on iron ore , and with the sugar trust on sugar , to mention some' other instances. If there is such a thing as a dem- o ratic party then it must have the power and the willingness to enforce party discipline against its servants who are false to it. This is just now the first aad greatest duty confronting the democracy. The party scourge ; , the fearless ex- coriations of the party leaders and of the party press , the adverse I votes of the rank and file , should fall squarely upon the democratic senators and the democratic rep- resentatives who have proved them- selves traitors to party principle and repudiators of party pledges. Meanwhile the democratic policy of a popular election of senators should be vigorously pushed. Why are there Hd mocratic" sen- ators who vote as republicans ; who vote with the very interests on which tbeir party is waging war ? Some few of them , perhaps , are where they are because they succeeded in fooling tfre democrats . ic rank and file. But more of them are there because they were elected by legislatures which were dominated by railroad and oil and sugar and steel interests. They owe their election more to those interests than to the democratic voters-and they remember their creator. It cannot too often be repeated that there is no room in this 'coun- try and no need for two repub- lican parties. There must be one party to oppose it uncompromis- ingly fearlessly , eternally. That , is tee province of the democratic party. All its principles , every , . i - , . . . I , I , While The State Journal has , been .one of the leading papers of the state for nearly forty years , yet its most rapid growth has been re . , cently , during which tinie it has come to be rQcognized by many as Nebraka's greatest paper , making most of those things that interest Nebraskans most , in this way creat- ing a place for itself in the daily life of thousands of Nebraska homes. The country press gener- ally could be quoted as saying ; that the editorial page of The Journel is exceptionally strong and fearlessly independent. It is also unusally bright , Bixby himself being a gem. No writer in Nebraska ever had tl e warm admiration of so many pe' ) - ple"as Bixby. His column in The Journal is alone worth the price of the paper. His wholesome phil- osophy will put sunshine and cheer into the most chronic grouch. The state university , the state house and all ] the other public institutions at Lincoln make the lournel peculiar- ly a paper for state people. It is clean , . e ii- proper medical advertising. Its sporting department is clever and there with the goods. More money is spent for state telegraphic news than by other state dailies. If you want , to know what is happening in Nebraska , as well as the whole world , The Lincoln Journal is the paper for you. Why not give it this trial subscription ? / JOHN F. PORATH Burge , Nebr.
