Editors Meet at Long Pine
The E. Y ; . E. A. met at Long
Pine last Saturday. We went
down Saturday morning and put
in the whole day with the editors
and the Long Pine people. It was
our good fortune to be entertained
at the home of Eugene Bucklin ,
who marrie an Aurora girl about
eleven years ago while running a
store at Ansley. Mr. Bucklin is
now proprietor of a general groc- '
ery store at Long Pine and is : do-
ing a good business. Mrs. Buck- ;
lin is a splendid cook and a model !
housekf per. They live in a neat ]
home built last summer by Mr. : ,
Bucklin in the northwest part of Ij I j
the town. '
Many of the editors were al- ,
ready on the ground or arrived on ,
the same train we did , but some I
came on the. noon train from the
east , so our meeting was not called
to order until 2 o'clock p. m. , in
the M. E. church , which was built
last summer at a cost of. 7000. .
This building has a basement which
is used for church sappers and is
fitted up complete with dining
room , kitchen and cooking uten-
sils , plates , cups and saucers etc.
The basement is built of cement
blocks and the upper part of frame ,
with main floor rising in gradual
slope away from the pulpit to the ,
rear which . is . the . front of the '
I
building and seated with 168 opera :
chairs. Three large rolling doors i
open up . to a class room large :
I
enough to seat sixty or more per- 1
sons. In the basement dining I
room we held our session and it
was so cool tha we were glad
to get out on - the - . - street , . at . the . . . close
to get warm. .
Teams were provided us to go '
to the seven springs south of the
old railroad bridge and we got
warmed up climbing a flight of
stairs reaching from Long Pine
creek to the table land. These
springs furnish an abundance of
pure water which is pumped into
a tank for the city by the C. & N.
W. , and also supplies the railroad
company with water. We , also
visited the Chatauqua grounds bu t
they are not well kept now. There
is good trout fishing in Long Pine
brook and the anglers go down of
an early morning and ply their
pole and lines ' for hours with un-
limited patience , satisfied to catch
one or two of the wary trout for
l
breakfast. There are no lakes
near town and trout fishing is the
only sport.
The wagon roads are good
around Long Pine and farming
land brings $35 to $50 per acre.
We heard of one farm selling at
$52 per acre. ,
Long Pine is seven miles east of
Ainsworth and ten , miles west of
Bassett , the county seats of Brown
and iiock counties respectively.
We were given a banquet in the
evening at the Commercial hotel.
Rev. Bash ford , the Congregational
minister , was toastmaster and con-
vinced those present that he is
something of a joker and a brilliant
talker. John M. Cooton respond
ed to a toast on the ladies with
credit to himself and the ladies.
W. L. lOrk of Creighton respond-
ed with "Rambling Thoughts" ;
G. M. Cooper to "The Press" ;
I. M. Rice to "Does it Pay to Ad-
vertise" and George A. Miles was
called on "Just to Defend Him-
self. " .They all did well
-Theyfcall , even to
the editor of THE DEMOCRAT , and
every .editor present expressed
himself as well pleased with our
meeting , glad he came , is going
