homestead south of town and mak-

W .D. Ricketts of Eli precinct
was in town yesterday on business.
Mr. Ricketts ' is one of the oldest
settlers in the western part of the
county and is still satisfied with
Cherry county.
The Valentine Lumber Co. has
finished building large lumber

Miss Ruth Stetter came home
Sunday night from Ponca , this
state , where she has been teaching
in the primary department of the
public school. She was so suc-
cessful that she has been re-elected
for the coming year ; with increased
salary. . , . .

. Ira Johnson of Gordon spent
several days in town this week.
He says that land in the western
part of the county has advanced
50 per cent in value inthe , past
year. The weather conditions
this spring , however , has made ; 'it
hard on the farmer , and settlers
have been slow about coming in.

F. H. Dillon , cashier of the n e w
bank at-Kilgore , was in town yes
terday on business. The , new bank
opened up for business the first , of
the' month and Mr. Dillon feels ,
satisfied with business already. ] . 'i
He says that Kilgore is booming , I
a new store building being erected
and several buildings being built. '

Peter Wantz stopped in Valen-
tine yesterday enroute to his home
at Johnstown. He had been out
to Lander , Wyo. , where he had I
taken a stallion which he disposed
of at a good price. Mr. Wantz
says oats were worth $1. 75 per
cwt. , but were better than raised
here. All crops'are = irrigated in I
'
that country.

this pa'per that Mrs. Silas Searson
recently deserted her husband and

four little children to run away
with a man by the name of Mont-
gomery , who also was married.
They are supposed to have gone
west. While to those concern d
.
such things seem hard ; in the long
run they are better for it.
Chris Dittmer was in town last
Thursday and called to bid us
goodbye before departing the fol-
lowing Sunday morning for New ,
York where he and his wife and
baby expected to take a steamer
for their old home near Hamburg ,
Germany. It has been 25 years '
since Mr. Dittmer came to this
country and he will note many
changes in the home of his youth. '
They expect to be gone . , about
three months.
Sheriff Rosseter was called to
the north table the first of the week
to assist in the pursuit of a crazy .
man who had been terrorizing the
neighborhood. : But on reaching
the scene of activities the man' * had
eluded his searchers , and after a
day's pursuit the sheriff returned
to town. It is thought that he .
went over on the reservation and a
squad of police are looking for
him now. The man , from the de-

scription given , was evidently ] a
stranger and .apparently ] well '
dressed. He was harmless ; his l :
