Ricketts of Eli precinct was in town yesterday on business. Mr. Ricketts ' is one of the oldest settlers in the western part of the county and is still satisfied with Cherry county. The Valentine Lumber Co. has finished building large lumber shed. The . structure' , erected . will . . . J be but temporary us it is the in- I tention to build one much larger in the near future/ Miss Ruth Stetter came home Sunday night from Ponca , this state , where she has been teaching in the primary department of the public school. She was so suc- cessful that she has been re-elected for the coming year ; with increased salary. . , . . . . . r. . Ira Johnson of Gordon spent several days in town this week. He says that land in the western part of the county has advanced 50 per cent in value inthe , past year. The weather conditions this spring , however , has made ; 'it hard on the farmer , and settlers have been slow about coming in. , F. H. Dillon , cashier of the n e w bank at-Kilgore , was in town yes terday on business. The , new bank opened up for business the first , of the' month and Mr. Dillon feels , satisfied with business already. ] . 'i He says that Kilgore is booming , I a new store building being erected and several buildings being built. ' / Peter Wantz stopped in Valen- tine yesterday enroute to his home at Johnstown. He had been out to Lander , Wyo. , where he had I taken a stallion which he disposed of at a good price. Mr. Wantz says oats were worth $1. 75 per cwt. , but were better than raised here. All crops'are = irrigated in I ' that country. Reports from Brownlee reach I this pa'per that Mrs. Silas Searson recently deserted her husband and 1 four little children to run away with a man by the name of Mont- gomery , who also was married. They are supposed to have gone west. While to those concern d . such things seem hard ; in the long run they are better for it. Chris Dittmer was in town last Thursday and called to bid us goodbye before departing the fol- lowing Sunday morning for New , York where he and his wife and baby expected to take a steamer for their old home near Hamburg , Germany. It has been 25 years ' since Mr. Dittmer came to this country and he will note many changes in the home of his youth. ' They expect to be gone . , about three months. Sheriff Rosseter was called to the north table the first of the week to assist in the pursuit of a crazy . man who had been terrorizing the neighborhood. : But on reaching the scene of activities the man' * had eluded his searchers , and after a day's pursuit the sheriff returned to town. It is thought that he . went over on the reservation and a squad of police are looking for him now. The man , from the de- ' scription given , was evidently ] a stranger and .apparently ] well ' dressed.
