The farmers in this vicinity shipped out . . . two cars of / fat hogs Sunday for the Omaha market. Elden Sparks returned last week from business trip to Seattle and : is again with the Ludwig Lumber Co. t. . Miss : lfayT ade arrived Tues- day night from New Carlisle , Ind. , for a visit with her sister , Miss Minnie Wade. Chas. Anderson and his. assist- ants went to the reservation this week to put up a couple of houses ? under contract. . Chas. Jordan is intending to commence the erection of a new house on the site of the one which recently burned down. -1V m. "Taylorhas . bou ght" the J Compton lot north of the court house and will begin the erection of a new residence immediately. S. , R. Elson of Omaha , state ag ent for the Equitable Life Ins. Co. ' , was in town the first of the week on business connected with the company. . A number of local Masons in- tended to attend the meeting of the Woodlake lodge last Saturday night , but missed the train which pulled out while they were eating supper. B. F. Ankeny of Deuel county was in the city Monday on busi- ness. Mr. Ankeny is one of the leading stockmen in the west'and may eventually extend his inter ests , into Cherry , county. . . , Dan Barnes was in town the first of the , week , havi Jg brought in his assessor's books from Gil- laspie and Barley precincts. He spent several days in town visiting around with his many friends. Miss Bessie Eaton was in town Monday enroute to her home at Rosebud. She has been teaching school at Stuart and was recently elected to the principalship of the schools for next year at that place. Charles Helzer has resigned his position with Davenport & ; Co. , and accepted one with the Valen- tine Lumber Co. He has always been a good steady boy and will succeed in his new work as he has ia his old. Hon. C. H. Cornell returned 'from Fremont Sunday , + night , , , hav ing started the day before from Omaha enroute home in his new automobile _ , but the roads were so " muddy that he was compelled to give up his proposed overland trip. ' J. R. Spencer of Brownlee was in Valentine the latter part of last week , turning in his assessor's books. Indian Agent Kelly at Eosebud has been removed by government inspectors and a man by the name of Ellis given the place. A great number of changes have been made on the reservation this spring , many old employees ; being replaced by new and younger men. Barney Denaeyer of Arabia and Charles Hanna of Woodlake were in town last Friday and were pleasant callers at this office. Mr. Denaeyer says his father likes his new home in' Hgood old Missouri" : and will spen - l his declining days there. Yet , "good old Cherry county" may draw him back to dwell among the many friends he has here. , Arthur Jacobson and : ) his father S. J. Jacobson came down from Tripp county last week to get some fence posts and other material with which to improve the forrn- er's Tripp county homestead which is east of Charbonneau's ranch. These people are from Loomis in rhelps county this state and the father is here helping to get his son established on his claim. The public schools closed a suc- cessful year last Friday , and once more the small boy is happy and the mothers sad. Next year has far from a promising outlook , for new teachers must be secured for nearly every room. It is to be hoped that the right men and women will be found , but in the educational world that kind of ma- terial is becoming rare , and it may take time to re-establish the old order of things. . . . .
