The alumni banquet , given in ( i i honor of Frof. R. H. Watson and ' i I' I wife last Friday night : , was at- ' 1 tended by 150 people/ The opera I I. ! house was crowded and a large table reached around the building and a smaller one down through , the ' center making a letter E. The supper didn't begin until near 10 o'clock and everybody was hun - gry. Some of us had no supper at home. The courses were slow- ly served and we continued hungry I until the last , there being either too ; . few waiters or too many people ! ! for them to handle and supper was . not over for near two hours. The toasts , led by _ A M ; Morrissey : as toastmaster , were , exceptionally good. First , Mr. Morrissey is a c good- toastmaster. . . Second , the toasts were good , for there was a good subject , and , third , those + called up9n were alive to their I subjects and the brilliant talks I there given have cast a gleam of L sunshine. along the pathway of i Prof. fatson ; t i . - that will forever ' ' " } - light his-way ' , brighten his life and bid him God speed. Judge James C. Quigley made a t brilliant address. , Chas. A. Helzer of the gradu : i ating class , spoke in highest trib- I utes of praise and esteem for both r . Prof. and Mrs : Watson. Miss Tennont of the high school paid tribute . to those who serve in a beautiful talk , such as to stir the deepest feelings of the soul. Chas. Brown gave a bit of his- tory of the Valentine school , its teachers and pupils. ; At the close John Helzer , in be- half Of the alumni in a splendid ' . speech , presented Prof. and Mrs. Watson with a solid silver set of ' knives , forks and , spoons. Prof. Watson had spoken and - tried to speak again but his heart was. too full and he-apologized for not being able to express himself as he felt. - J. C. Pettijohn came up from - ' . . Longpine to attend the banquet and was called upon : for a speech and'he ' told us how he had labored with Prof. Watson for - the good of our school and always ; felt a home- like interest in Valentine and our school. All over the land he told us are Valentine graduates scatter- ed and. that they do credit to Val- , tine. That our school ranks well up among the best in the state and ' - of our 106 graduates everyone of them are doing well and holding i goqd and resp6nsible positions. During Prof. Watson's stay ! here , : for 12 years , he has been a member of the board of directors - - of the Valentine ! B. & L. Ass'n. , and has been , an. honored and re- spected citizen among us. Not a child that doesn't speak his praises as .educator and he has inspired his pupils to proper energies. , - \V m. Quigley has bought the Taylor property on Main St. and expects to build soon. Harry Landon and wife are here visiting his wife's parents , E. W. Johnson and wife. They are on their way east. Ransom H. Blowers and his neighbor came to Valentine'last week for lumber to build on their new Tripp county homesteads. Mr. Blowers registered with us last falL : Ben F. Dean is a new settler , 8 miles north of the state line in Tripp county and was in town Friday buying lumber. He lives near Blowers and Perrin and not far from Charbonneau's. Mayor Dahlman writes Jim Quigley that he got the § 800 gold watch in the Elk's contest and asks Jim to thank his many friends in Valentine for their kindness in I his behalf as a popular candidate for mayor of Omaha. The Harding Stock Co. , played here Monday and Tuesday nights to good audiences , though the weather was bad for shows. Those who saw the first play , "Drifted Apart , " wanted to see "Buster Brady" and the result was crowded house. The company is now enroute east but expects to double back this way soon. We . predict a full house on their re , turn. . Miss Neva Templeton and By ron J. Barker were married at high noon last Friday , May 21 , 1909 , at the home of the bride's sister , Mrs. B. I. Johnson in this city , Judge James C. Quigley of- ! . ficiating. Miss Templeton is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. N. W. Templeton of Maryville , Mo , and only recently came to our city to visit her sister and assist with her millinery and dressmaking busi- ness. Mr. and Mrs Barker will move onto a ranch on the Rosebud reservation. Henry Swenson , an old time friend of ye editior , is in town this week on business. Henry and I grew up together on the prairies of Riley county , Kan.8 and now Henry and his brothers own a large wholesale jobbing house in Omaha and could raise more money in bushels now than he used to raise of corn on that Kansas prairie farm. Henry and his brothers are all workers and they have succeeded. We're go ing for a drive on the reservation tomorrow with Dan and Cyclone the best traveling team in these parts. Lake News. Walter Goo din spent Sunday at E. R. Barnes. R. I. Hines is putting down wells this week. . I Dan Adamson andV. . H. Kin- kaid went to Cody after . oil to dip their cattle. John DeVillers went to Cody Friday. Alta Barnes came home from Cody where she has been attending school. A school picnic will be held in the Gillaspie grove June 18 , and a fiance in the evening.
