E. Defebaugh , is the regularly retained manager of the lumber lobby that is working over time Washington : trying to , maintain an iniquitous and obsolete tariff , is greatly exercised over Farm and Stock's attack on the , . said iniquity. The Lumberman would still be more exercised if it understood how deeply the farmers of the country feel on this subject. They are watching congress arid to speak plain English , the domi- nant party if it wants to stay in } power , should keep in mind the fact that is being ! watched by the farmers. There is no use in arguing this subject in detail with The Lum- berman. . The lumber tariff is all . -wrong ; there was no excuse for raising it to $2 and § 4 in 1897 , and there is no excuse except that of revenue for retaining a single trace of it now , - and we believe the forest conservation consideration outweighs the revenue considera- tion. Lumber should be free. We are well aware that Gifford Pinchot , chief of the forest ser- I vice , has taken the view of the high tariff lumbermen. We re spect Mr. Pinchot , but we fully understand' tremendous pres- . sure the lumber lobby : has brought ; to bear I ; > upon him , and we know Which do you think won ? Not long ago two men , athletes , went x into a contest to see which could stand ' erect and hold his arms stretched out I full length at either side of his body forI I . . . S the longer time. One man fad fed on - . steaks and chops , sausage , ham , roast I beef , etc. ; the other ate heartily , but con- fined himself to such foods as Quaker ; Oats , rice. macaroni , etc. Which do you > ; , ' think heldout longer ? : The first man lasted twenty-two min- utes. The Quaker Oats-macaroni-rice chap concluded ; to stop after he had been at it more than three hours. ' " There's more strength and economy in eating lots' of - Quaker Oats than most 1 people imagine. Every family should 1 cat plentifully of : Quaker Oats at least once every , dsy ; ; I break.fast.is the bcst time. It. strengthens . ) ' d1 " for the day. : . For this reason we dis count his position and take that of the great majority of disinterested persons who have given this sub- ject careful consideration ; namely , that one potent way to prolong I the life of the forests of the U nit- ed States is to draw a part of our wood supplies fromjhe.forests of other countries. s We wonder whether congress , and the republican party will per- mit themselves to be duped by the : activities of a lumber lobby which may represent one timber owjier to every thousand lumber con- sumers. Later : The ways and means committee has reported its tariff bill , and as we feared that portion of it relat ing to lumber is most unsatisfact- ory. The tariff on rough lumber is reduced from $2 to § 1 per thous- . and , but the tariff on finished lum- ber , although reduced , remains" high as to be prohibitive. Ninety per cent of all the lumber tho farmer and home builder buys , is finished , Of what benefit to hfm , then , is the reduction on rough lumber ? We should have abso- lutely free lumber , but in any oth- er event there should be no dis crimination between rough and fin ishcl. We warn members of congress that the lumber schedule proposi- tion of the bill is so fra'med as to delude the ignorant , but to do no goorl to the consumer. Again we say , let us "have free lumber.
