While we have been somewhat tardy in acknowledging this courtesy , we fully appreciate it. The little folks of the primary room have had grand success with their box gardens this year. They now have lettuce large enough to eat , sweet peas -inches high , bunch beans bearing pods one and one-fourth inches long and quite a number of other vegetables and ' flowers. The fad of having a speaker for graduating exercises instead of the good old way of having the students give the entertainment seems to have run its course in many towns of Nebraska. We notice by the school notes in different papers that i large number of schools will go back to the old plan this year. With such instructors Supt. Gregory of Crete , Supt. Wilson of Wayne , Supt. Bettenga of Cedar Rapids and Miss Driscol of Valen- tine in : the normal , the young peo- ple who are planning to come to Valentine this summer are sure to get that kind of work which will be of the greatest benefit to them in their teaching during the coming year. year.We We fully appreciate the friendly criticiSms that have come so often f this year when we have let a week go ; by ' without writing any school notes. The Valentine schools now have three baseball teams as follows : The high school team , the Nation als , composed mostly of 7th and 8th grade boys , and a third team known as Bryan Quigley's ? forces. Last Friday the Nationals lined up against the high school team on the diamond south of Valentine. The re:3ultr.lS a score of 15 to 9 in favor of the' ' . high school. .our old friend E. P. , Wilson of I \\foyne writes us to look up a room t I for , ? him during his stay in Valen I tine for the junior normal work. \ Supt. Wilson is a strong man ' ' among he educators of Nebraska , | and Valentine is certainly fortunate : in securing him. He is a man who ! , never make loud professions , but ; ' when it comes to doing good , solid t I work he can always deliver the I goods. He is to be at the head of I the Chadron school the coming year. Having taught with Supt. Wilson several years in the Lincoln . normal we know him to be a man of sterling'worth. I II I It behooves every person In Cher I ry county to do everything in his power to help make the Valentine I junior normal a success this year. i We do not believe the same ! amount ! , of money appropriated in any other I way has done as much good for the schools of Nebraska as the amount appropriated for junior normals. Especially is this true insofar as Cherry county is concerned. The teaching force in this county is 100 per cent ' better than it was 'before I advent of the junior normal. Again , ' without the normal Valentine would I seem pretty dull during June and July. To make the normal a suc- cess this year it is absolutely neces sary that the citizens of Valentine throw open their homes aud furnish board and rooms at prices which will not seem prohibitive to the young people who wish to come here from the surrounding counties. : . : : R .f iff.roJj LUMBER I I Lath , Shingles , Doors , 1 Windows , Paper , Pat- : ent Roofing Tar Paper , i Paints , Oil , Yarnish , !
