Ed Vrooman has purchased the
Beer's property across the street
from Jas. Shepard's and is fenc
ing it and otherwise improving it.
Clarence L. Milks and Miss
Ethel Runyan , both , of Lakeland ,
Nebr. , were united in marriage
Monday ? , May 10 , by Judge Quig-
ley.
Services as usual on Sunday
next , May 16 , in St. John's church
both morning and evening. There
will be a celebration of the Holy
Communion at 11 a. m. , with ser-
mon. Evensong with address at
8 p. m.
Rev. Samuel C. Benson of
Brooklyn , la. , will preach in the
Presbyterian church Sunday , the
16th and 23rd , both morning and
evening. All members of the
church and the congregation are
urged to be present.
The officers and board of direc-
tors of the Northwestern railroad I
system are making a semi-annual :

will inspect the cut-off between .
here and Thacher and the new
bridge site across the Niobrara.

were in from the Schlagel Tues-
day. Bob tells us that they have
a new girl at his house , born Mon

Hon. A. H. Metzger of Merri-
man called at our office Tuesday

while in town on business. Mr.
Metzger is , engaged extensively in .
the stock business in the western I
end of the county , and he , with
many other stockmen , say grass
is very backward this spring and
cattle are pretty week , but that a
few warm days will put the range
in good shape. Most of the stock-
men have been out of hay for a
month ; or six weeks.
On Monday ' evening , last , May
10 , Woodlake chapter , 0. E. S. ,
at Woodlake , was constituted , and
officers for the ensuing year
elected , by Mrs. Marie S. Apian ,
P. G. W. M. , of Rushville most
ably assisted by Mrs. Minnie H.
Crites , P. G. ' \ V. M. , of Chad ron ,
as grand marshal. Before the
ceremonies a deicio.us | banquet was
served to the Masons and their
wives by the ladies gf the chapter
in their usual gracious and boun-
teous style. - 'M sdanies Osborne
and Barnes a'nd Mell Hanna were
guests from Ainsworth , and Mes-
dames Rice and Bertha Sparks ; and
Rev. W. W. Wells from Valen-
tine. It is not often that two
grand officers can be had for such
an occasion , and \V-oodlakeis to be

congratulated. Theye are also the
only two past grand matrons in .
all Northwestern Nebraska. The
chapter at Woodlake is prosper-
ous and is rapidly growing in
numbers and is a credit to the
community. At the close of the
exercises nIrs..pJan was grate-
fully reme'rabered by the chapter
with a handsome souvenir spoon
and a beautiful band painted china
plate.

Myrtle Barnes Goodin.
Myrtle Barnes Goodin , eldest
daughter of Mr. ' and Mrs. . E. R. :
Barnes , died at her home near
Lake , Neb. , at 5:30 : p. m. , May 8 ,
1909 , at the age of 19 years , 11
months and 7 days.
She was born on Snake river
June 14 , 1890. Here she spent _
all her happy girlhood days , and
on Sept. 28 , 1907 , was married to
Walter Goodin. To this union
.
were born two children , one son ,
aged 22 months , and an infant
daughter age three weeks.
On May 6 , 1907 , she united with
the M . E. church , * and" p.Ilvho' '
have known her since infancy
loved and respected her and now ,
that God has . taken her yqung . life
from this world of sickness and
care , we shall miss her bright ,
happy smile and gentle ways from
our circle. We shall mourn for
her in Jbhis world , but can look ,
I
forward to meeting her in that I
bright home above , where she and '
her brother Alvah are happy with
J es e s.
She leaves to mourn for her a I
husband and two little children , a
father and mother , two brothers , '
one sister and an aged grandfather
and grandmother ; a large number
of aunts , uncles and cousins and
many friends.

A vacancy is In our home
Which never can be filled.
Tier faith looks up to ' .rhalone. ,
Her spirit now has flown ;

She left us here to weep and mourn

S. J. Blakely has sold his home-
stead near Big Creek and is think-
ing of moving to Idaho. He and
Mrs. Blakely ] spent several days
in town the past week.
Mrs. M. V. Nicholson enter-
tained a number of lady friends
Tuesday evening at progressive
500 , in honor of her sister , Mrs.
Flynn , of O'Neill , who has been
her guest the past two weeks.
Mrs. I. M. Rice received a hand-
some prize for the highest score.
New sidewalks have been order-
ed by the town board to be. built
in sevral places around town where
.needed , and during the next , few
weeks some streets will bear evi-
dence of the new order , but when
completed will add greatly to the
appearance of the property and
i 1 convenience in walking.
