mayor. Yes , that's the sentiment :
of the people. . It has been said .
that Omaha wants such a man as
. . . Jim for a mayor. Some say he is
a grafter , but he may be less a
grafter than the other fellow. He
may be a better business man than
the other man for Omaha. That's
what Omaha wanted. A man for
Omaha. That's what they elected
and Jim will be there when he's
needed and he has a mind of his
own , though he may not suit the
Omaha preachers.
We have a lot of extra work this
week which you will find in fine
type calling attention to the special
election to vote bonds for water
works and electric lights and city
ordinances pertaining tothe : same.
It is our new font of nonpareil
type and ths first time in use to
call this special election. It means
a great deal to Valentine whether
. we will keep up with the demands
i
of our city and , the needs of her
people or neglect the proper water
! supply for fire protection and to
supply the town.
There will be a greater demand
for water this year than . ever , and
we have been short of water sup-
ply for several years during the
summer months and the pump is
II kept pretty busy with numerous
i restrictions upon users of water.
We have had to be careful : many
times of how much water to use ,
and often the sprinklers have
i
drained the tank before the time
of shutting off , according to city
ordinance , and leaves us on hot
windy evenings at S o'clock with-
out a barrel of water in our old
rotten tank to protect L'S against
fire.

Lincoln elected Don C. Love
mayor and voted the town dry by
nearly 1,000 majority. That's all
rigut , if that's what Lincoln wants.
There are lots of people sending
I children to school there and it will
satisfy them , but it may be a hard
. blow ! on the schools. About : lO-
000 ' will be cut off the school fund
I in Lincoln and they are already
I voting the limit for school support.
I It must mean lower wages for
teachers and less expense in run-
ning the schools. That's tho only
way out of it. It may mean in-
ferior service and teachers but
they must cut down expenses.
'Cut out the { graft and raise the
valuations in assessments" maybe
a watchword but something is to
be done and must be done.
