There is some friction between
the Valentine School Board and
the graduating class through some
misunderstanding and lack of co
operation , which we trust , will be
amicably settled between them for
the good of our school. This is
rather an unusual state of a flairs ,
as it is most generally the school
against the teacher , but here the
locality to Prof. Watson seems
most pronounced , and the School
Board should jar loose from the
position they have taken. They
have been hasty and ill-advised as
to the proper time for making
their ruling. Any action savoring
of rank prejudice , and casting a
reflection upon our school work
under the guidance of Prof. Wat
son , will be met , not only with re
sentment by his pupils , but by the
people of Valentine generally.
The meeting called Monday night
was adjourned without elt'octing a
settlement of their controversy to
Mar. loth pending a hearing from
the State Supt.
Carr Making Good.
A. M. Morrissey returned from
Lincoln Monday morning , after
spending a week with the legisla
ture in the interests of Mr. Carr's
bill , appropriating § 15.000 for the
establishment of an agricultural
station here. The bill has passed
the house and is well on its way
through the senate and will prob
ably become a law before the end
of next week. Mr. Carr has made
a splendid fight for this bill and
has had to contend against the Uni
versity faculty because the ap
propriation comes out of the Uni
versity fund. However , the op
position of the University has been
overcome and there is every pros
pect of our getting this station ,
which will be of incalcuable value
to the farmers and stock raisers of
this part of the state. Mr. Can-
is making a good fight for this bill
and his success shows that the people
ple of this district made no mis
take in electing him to represent
them in the legislature. Mr. Mor
rissey says that Mr. Carr of this
district and B. S. Harrington of
the district comprising Rock and
Brown counties are among the
most influential members of the
house and that no two men in the
legislature are doing better work
for their constituents. If these
western districts will continue to
send men like these to the legisla
ture it will not be long before the
western part of the state will make
itself felt in matters of legislation
and will get the recognition we
are entitled to.
The republican congress has ap
propriated one million dollars to
prosecute the honest men appoint
ed by a republican administration ,
in land frauds. Is this "republi
can principles" we hear so much

Obituary.

j Jessie ( Lazenby ) Searby was
' j born in VanBuren Co. , Iowa , Sept.
, 1S62 , died Feb. 20 , 1909 , at
Crookston , Neb. She was mar
ried to James H. Searby , Oct. 24 ,
1S95. They have resided in Cher
ry county ever since their mar
riage and were respected by the
whole community. They have
struggled together for a home in
which they have succeeded by con
stant toil and honesty. She was
a member of the M. E church ,
Ladies Aid society and W.C.T.U ,
in which she was a credit to each
i society , always performing her
'pirt ' for the good of humanity.
The deceased had been bedfast
for a number of weeks witli a
tumor. The doctors were consult
ed in regard to her condition and
a/lvisptl IIPT to go to Omaha , but

her. She was a devoted wile and
mother , cheering her relatives and
friends as nearer the end came.
The funeral was conducted by
Rev. Edward Magill Sunday , Feb.
28 , from the Woodman hall , in the
presence of a large circle of ac
quaintances who followed the bor y
to the last resting phice of earth.
She leaves a husband , son , moth
er , three sisters and two brotheis.
All were present , except two sis
ters and one brother.
