F. J. Pratt of Humphrey , Xeb ,
new deputy oil inspector under
Shallenberger's administration ,
was in Stuart , Friday. Mr. Pratt
is owner and editor of the Humph
rey Democrat , and appears to be
a very pleasant member of the

Married at the home of L E.
Shepard in Valentine , Wednesday ,
Feb. IT , 1909 , Mr. J. H. Downing
of Wood lake and Miss Julia
Rhoder of Xorden , the Rev. W.
W. Wells of the Episcopal church
officiating. Mr. Downing is a
brother of Mrs Lee Shepard and
a son of S. B. Downing of Xorden ,
who is well known to many people
of Valentine and eastern Cherry
ounty.
The Hon. J. R Fee of Crooks-
ton sold his farm of 600 acres to
an eastern man , the consideration
being § 10 per acre. lie will re
turn to Missouri in the spring , his
future home. Mr. Fee is one of
the early settlers and one of the
leiding farmers of this section.
He represented this district in the
legislature IS years ago. He
leaves with the best wishes of his
neighbors.
M. V. Xicholson returned Sun
day from Lincoln where he was
registered as a lobbyist from Val
entine for an agricultural experi
ment station to be established here
and to get an appropriation for
our fish hatchery. These bills he
says have been introduced and we
can hope that Valentine will be
probably considered for the lo
cation of the experiment station if
the bill of J F. Carr passes.
J. P. Kreycik of Arabia was in
town yesterday , just returning
from Xorfolk where he had ac
companied his mother on her way
home to Verdel in Knox county ,
after a visit at the home of her j
son for five weeks. Mr Kreycik ,
tells us that the snow drifts in
Xorfolk are the largest he ever
saw. Some are piled as high as
one story buildings and the streets
are full of it. Almost buried the
city of Xorfolk like Pompeii ,
