TPIUtfSDAY , JULY 9 , 190S.
The democratic national conven
tion opened at Denver Tuesday ,
July T , 190S , with Theodore A.
Bell of California temporary chair
man , who addressed the convention
in a brilliant speech , clearly setting
forth the important work for this
convention. After the appoint
ment of credentials committee and
a committee on resolutions headed
by Gov. Haskell o4" Oklahoma , the
convention adjourned for the day.
Numerous planks were brought in
by the delegates from different
states which were gone over care
fully and each given a hearing.
W. J , Bryan was nominated for
president Thursday evening on
first ballot.
The platform has been adopted
satisfactory to the convention.
Concessions were made to the
Bryan element when it was learned
that the majority held 'firm to the
Bryan faith. The eastern democ
racy yielded gracefully when they
learned that the Bryan delegates
were not only instructed and
pledged but were also heartily and
enthusiastically for Bryan.
The people are all enthus
iastic and there is ginger and snap
to the proceedings. Just enough
opposition to make the fight inter
esting and inspiring.
People who heard Chairman
Bell speak say he talked like a
glorious combination of John the
Baptist , Savatiarola , Tennyson
and Patrick Henry , like a poet ,
an idealist , a plummed knight eag
er for the lists , intensely earnest
and patriotic , bubbling over with
love of country and fellowraen ?
dedicated heart and soul to their
struggle for all that is best in our
government.
John V % Kern of Indiana was
nominated for vice president today
( Friday afternoon ) by acclamation.
Kern was candidate for governor
in 1904.
P. C. means "plow corn" F. S.
should be added to signify "feed

driver. " Talmage once told of
the clock that refused to run be
cause the "pendulum" wanted to
be the "hands" and the "hands"
wanted to be the "main spring. "
Each part was dissatisfied with its
program and the clock refused to
run. Some people have made
dismal failures in changing oc
cupations , but it was the clock that
stopped , congregations failed to
congregate and the great watch
maker should give the watch a
jerk and get the corn plowers and

There is a woman in our town
who wants people to believe she
is interested in humanity and is
always hanging around or butting
in where she is not wanted , is an
agitator , aggravator , a provoker
and a nuisance , is always stirring
up trouble and people shun
her on the street so that she
walks mostly alone and goes the
opposite direction , meeting people
rather than going with them.

iiblic opinion is unerring , public confidence sel
dom misplaced. The true worth of every business
concern to the community in which it operates is
fixed by its clientele , the value-giving power of ev
ery commercial institution may be determined by
the amount of patronage it receives. The people
have unmistakably proclaimed their confidence in
and its methods , by bestowing upon it a far greater
patronage than that accorded any other place in
Valentine , Where the major portion of the fair ,
the impartial , discriminating public buys its Liquor

Solution of the
'Temperance" Question
TEMPERANCE means "the use in
moderation. "
You can drink two pints a day of
STORZ TRIUMPH BEER
and be strictly temperate.
Tv-o pints of Storz Triumph Beer
contain less alcohol than one pint of
cider and in addition to this contain over
8 per cent , soluble food , which builds
and sustains the system.
If the public drank nothing stronger
than Storz Triumph Beer
THERE WOULD BE NO "TEMPER.
