Paul Cole returned Tuesday

Bessie F. Gaskill came in from
her school south of Cody Saturday ,
having closed a successful term.
Mr. and Mrs. Samuel W. Green
of Ewing spent Sunday visiting at
the home of Rev. and Mrs. Wells.

in one of their delightful rambling
walks over the hills Friday even
ing.

The George Veach family moved
to Emmet last week as Mr. Veach
has been transferred to the section
there.
Mr. and Mrs. E. C , Scovel of
Rosebud reservation are in town
visiting their daughter Mrs. ii. S.
Lockwood.
C. 0. Carpenter has just finished
painting the entire Britt and the
T. C. Hornby property on the
North table.
Shellbourne Brothers will man
age a merry-go-round run by
steam at the George Davis place
on the Fourth of July.
C. 0. Carpenter was in town on
business Tuesday , returning to the
north table Wednesday where he
has some big painting contracts.
A Greek laborer was struck and
instantly killed by frieght number
116 near Wood Lake last Thurs
day morning. The body was sent
to Johnstown.
Hon. C. H. Cornell returned
from his western trip Friday after
noon , coming down on the freight.
Mrs. Cornell went on through
to Omaha on the passenger.
Mrs. C. O. Carpenter and little
boy James Warden left for Mar-
shaltown , Iowa Thursday morning
where she will spend the next two
months visiting with relatives and
friends.
The depot was thronged with
Indians Tuesday morning who
were down to meet their children
from the Indian school at Rapid
City. About thirty children were
passengers.
A matrons speaking contest was
held at Georgia last week. Mrs.
Belle Hornback was awarded first
prize and Mrs. S. Moon second
prize. They repeated the contest
speaking in Valentine Tuesday
night at the M. E. church.
Mrs. Abba Thackrey , Wallace
and Eleanor came up to Valentine
from the Hackberry Lake Tuesday
and Mrs. Thackrey and Eleanor
will stay in town a few weeks.
Wallace returned Wednesday ac
companied by Lawrence Rice to
spend a few days fishing.
The old wooden porch floor in
front of theDonoli.T hotel is being
replaced by a cement one this
week.

Miss Louise Bates came in from
Lincoln Saturday morning and
will visit for a- few weeks at the

in the country last Saturday.
Mrs. L. C. Sparks and daughter
Helen returned Sunday morning
from a months visit with relatives
and friends in Indiana and Ohio.
A fine girl came to brighten the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Cowden of Granite , Kansas , form
erly Cherry county residents , last
week.

where he has been attending a
pharmacist college and gradu ated

he has accepted a position as
pharmacist ,
Hollister Brandon had a narrow
escape from drowning in the mill
pond Friday afternoon. He was
in bathing and holding onto a boat
rowed by Grover Francke. Franc-
ke in throwing a rock into the
water accidently struck Brandon
on the head cutting an ugly gash ,
the blow well nigh knocked the
boy senseless and he went under
water twice before Francke could
get boy and boat to shore. It re
sulted in a bad scare for both
youths.
The village school election was
held Monday night at the court
house. Nine months school and a
levy of 11 mills was voted for
teachers salaries and 4 mills for
incidental fund. At an adjourned
meeting held Tuesday night it
was decided to transfer § 2000 from
the incidental fund and § 500 from
the teachers fund to the Building
fund and instruct the county com
missioners to levy a sufficient amount -
mount to collect § 2800 for the in
cidental fund. This makes a total
of § 7525 in the Building fund and
the contract with the lowest bidder
was accepted to build an addition
to the Valentine school building.-

Anderson were elected members
of the school board taking the
place of W. D. Clarkson and G.
A. Chapman , retiring members.
