" This date being Sunday Mr. Bryan will not talk politics , but this lecture has been deliv ered in nearly all the great cities pf the United States. This is a great opportun ity for the people of Cherry county to hear the world's greatest orator , and , as this lecture is strictly nonpartisan san , we hope to see the people ple of this county turn out to hear him without regard Jto politics. Clarkson and wife have moved into one of W. A. Petty- crew's houses. John Cronin was in town the other day and told us to send him THE DEMOCKAT. L. N. Mai Jeli'ers and wife have mov ! ed out to the Grandpa Holsclaw house which is now owned by the YanBuren brothers. C. F. Callen and family have gone to Garrison to visit C. V. Thorne and wife and from there we understand they go to Idaho. Mr. Lockwood , special agent for the German Mutual Fire Ins. Co. , of Omaha , was visiting the local agent , I. M. 'liice , last Satur day. Frank Ballard spent a couple of days in town last week. He don't come often but he is a jolly boy and meets a lot of them while he is here. The Presbyterian supper , given Tuesday evening , was a success. The chicken and gravy and other edibles were good- well cooked and was well patronized by a cheerful people. Roy Caylor , formerly of Hub- bard , la. , has accepted a position as barber with Elmer DeBolt and will play ball with the Valentine team this summer. Mr. Caylor is a pitcher and we need him. Jas. McLean of llosebud came to town last Friday to do some trading and while here played a few games of checkers with some of the experts. Jim says he'll be down again in a month and try to have more time to play. Mrs. L. C. Sparks and Miss Wade will accompany Mr. Sparks to Fremont Sunday and from there they go to Omaha where Mrs. Sparks attends the grand lodge of the 0. E. S. Mr , Sparks goes to Lincoln as a delegate to the state grand lodge M. W. A. W , H. Carter of Cody came down last Saturday to accept his house that Grant Boyer has been rebuilding for him. He found it in good condition and Mr. Boyer goes to Cody this week to begin the erection of a fine residence for Mr. Carter near the one he sold to Wra. Hook. Jack Ddmbly helped out in The Stock Exchange while Walther Mejtendorff was in Omaha last week. Jack says a prairie fire , which is supposed to have gotten away from a man on the old Bristol tel place , burned an S-ton stack of hay for him and Ed Sears. People ple should be more careful when handling fire , burning fire guards or old rubbish. L. C. Sparks received a tele gram from the Omaha Daily News yesterday , bringing the glad in formation that Miss Elsie Sher man , our popular deputy post mistress , was awarded sixth prize in the Daily Is'ews contest. The award entitles Miss Sherman to a § 50 gold watch. Much credit is due Mr. Sparks and others who hustled subscriptions and Miss Sherman's unrelenting determina tion is certainly commendable. Good apples at the Central Market. 12 William Searby , a Crookston merchant , was in town yesterday. Wm.'Steadraan was a visitor in town a couple of days last week. Walther Meltendorff returned from a business trip to Omaha Sunday. Bernie Tinkham called at our office last Thursday while we were printing the papers. Miss Anna Connolly and her sister , Mrs. Harry Hall , of Spok ane , Wash , , are here visiting their mother. They intend to return Saturday. John Kazda has added another fine improvement to his popular tonsonrial apartments by having his barber pole brightened up with a new coat of paint. The baseball game that was to tiave taken place here last Friday between Valentine and Ainsworth was postponed until the 6th o 7th of May on account of the stormy weather. Capt. A. G , Shaw goes , to Hot Springs , S. D. , to have a cancer removed from his lip that has been causing him some inconvenience the past few years. He expects to return Sunday or Monday. Rev. Wells made his regular visitations to Georgia , Cody and Merriman the first of the week , returning Tuesday. He says the ladies at Merriman gave a fair last week and cleared over § 105. David Groves called last Thurs day to have his paper changed to Hay Springs where he goes to herd sheep for Mr. Thayer. David is an industrious young man and will always try to earn his wages. Frank Kludsikofsky and Hans Osterman were down from Geor gia Tuesday on business. Hans tells us that he and Bob Barnes were riding horseback when the big prairie fire of last week came upon them. They were caught and Bob wanted to ride through the fire to the other side , though Hans protested and wanted to back fire , but they rode through and got badly burned about their face and their horses were badly burned also. L. C. Sparks goes to Lincoln Sunday to attend the State Grand Lodge of the M. W. A. as a dele gate from this county. Mr. Sparks has been counsul of our camp for six years and has always been an enthusiastic Woodman. He is a worthy representative , and , large ly through his efforts , our lodge has prospered and held interesting meetings , Mr. Sparks would like to go as a delegate to the Grand Lodge at Peoria , III. , and it would be gratifying to western members of this state to have him represent them at a session of the Grand lodge. The school board has hired three new teachers , two Jones sisters from Missouri and Miss Collett , a former graduate of this school. The younger Miss Jones takes the grammar grade and the elder the science or twelfth grade and there is to be another teacher in the high school , as yet not elected. Miss Holly , Miss Wendte and Miss Pettijohn are the three teach ers leaving. The following old teachers are retained : Prof. Watson , supt ; Mfss Driscoll. 3rd and 4th grades ; Miss Dunham , 2nd and 5th , and Miss Gordon , primary. State Journal. Last Saturday evening about 8:30 : Ed Cohota , jr. , heard some one in the back yard of the Cohota restaurant and shot through the window in the direction of the sound. A few minutes later Sara Bordeaux of Rosebud was com plaining that he was in the rear of Cohota's place where he had put up for the night and ordered a room and someone shot him , the bullet lodging inx his thigh. He i. had the bullet removed and was i walking about town the next day j but said it was quite painful. It was unfortunate for both , as many stories are told about the affair. 7 Spring is here and we are well supplied with farm implements for the spring's work. Paxson Hornback has gone to Surprise on a visit and from there goes back to North Dakota. Dr. ' M'eehan , osteopath has , moved into his new office rooms over the Red Front store. Tucker and the other to an Indian by the name of David. The Ainsworth base ball team will come up next Thursday and play Valentine. Come and Fee them. Valentine is going to put up a good game and will beat them if they can. The game at Ains worth stood 15 to 11 for Ains worth. Can we beat them this time ? Headmaster Lyman , we hear , will soon move to'Valentiue where he will have his headquarters. His secretary , Mr. Weston , will also be here. We are glad to welcome these new citizens to our city. Mr. Lyman has rented the Carter building north of M. V. Nicholson's. Sheriff Rosseter has two pris oners , James and Tony Maule , whom he brought to town several : lays ago , charged with stealing several articles from the neigh bors in the vicinity , 10 miles west af Simeon near the Snake river. Geo. Christopher missed a rifle ind got a search warrant issued for the sheriff to search the Maule borne. The rifle was not found but a wagon load of other stuff was found that various neighbors claimed , among which was a keg 3f silverware , nine guns , clothing 3f various kinds and other bric-a- brac. The neighbors have been missing things from their homes For a couple of years and they believe that a part of mischief- making will be stopped. The Maule family are Kinkaid home steaders and have not been here very long.
