The Haley family received the
sad intelligence Monday of the
death of a cousin in Utah whose
funeral will be held in O'Neill this
week. The young man was af
flicted with appendicitis and the
operation was unsuccessful.

The infant child of Chas. Gas-
san , born last Thursday , died yes
terday. Mrs. Gassan has been
very ill.
W. A. IBonser came down from
Rosebud yesterday in the cold
wind in the afternoon. The weath
er is fine today.

There are several families now
quarantined with scarlet fever but
they are not all as sore as Geo.
Trace well was at the town bmrd.
Harmony is the name of the
new postoffice on North Table and
J. C. Salmon is postmaster. The
postoffice is at the cross roads
north of his house where he has
located his store.
We are informed that Minnie
Rickets , daughter of C. B. Rick-
etts , died March. 3rd , of consump
tion at Phoenix , Arizona , where
the family'had been living hoping
to benefit her health.
The fish known as "suckers"
which eat the spawn of other fish
are being seined out of the dam.
The riot is placed at the bridge ,
and will gather in the "suckers"
as they make their annual run up
the creek.
Rushville is voting wet this
vear. Having tried a dry town for
2 years they're glad to get back to
licensed saloons. Ainsworth will
also vote for license again and
Omaha will have saloons this
vear. Valentine will go wet two
to one.
Andrew Morrisscy is a winner.
He ought to be , for he is able ,
energetic and courageous in the
cause he believes just. Mr. Bryan
will have no more able champion
on the delegation than the "gentle
man from Cherry. " Holt Co.

There was a busy day in court
last Saturday when it was learned
that four prisoners would pjead
guilty and thus save a week's time
in court. Business was taken up
promptly and the work finished
so far as possible and court ad
journed about 9 o'clock Saturday
night.
Supt. W. J. O'Brien and Wm.
Francke , in charge of the fish
hatchery at this place , distributed
110,000 brook trout east and west
of here last week. About 125,000
northern trout will be ready for
distribution within ten days.
Mr. O'Brien returned to Gretna
Friday and sent up 120.000 rain
bow trout to be hatched at this
hatchery and tjiey will be ready to
be placed in the Cherry county
streams in a few weeks.
W. H. Carter returned last Sat
urday from his trip to Kansas and
stopped in Valentine to let the
contract for rebuilding his house
that was partially destroyed by
fire recently. T. M. Rice , the lo
cal agent for the German Mutual
Fire Ins. Co. , adjusted the loss
and the same was promptly paid
to Mr. Carter , who has given the

Often these marks are scarcely dis
tinguishable. On old pieces there will
frequently be found marks made by
knives , dents from teeth on tankardr ;
and pots and sometimes the rudely cut
initials of individual owners. In olden
days communion sots were of pewter ,
and occasionally a collector is fortu
nate enough , to run across a whole
