days in Omaha last week as a
witness before the grand jury.
George Tobien has returned to
Valentine and has been helping in

Mrs. Wesley Holsclaw and
daughter , 'Miss Lillian , are in
Omaha this week , taking io the
carnival.
We forgot to mention the return
of Caleb Gaskill from Hot Springs
a couple of weeks ago , much im
proved in health.

Mrs. D. Stinard is home from"
Sfcurgis where she had been tiking
care of her daughter , Mrs. John
Bullis who is recovering.
Earl Riggle has gone out to R.
M. Crabb's to enjoy a vacation ,
while also assisting Mr. Crabb
with building a barn.
A number of people came to
town Saturday to witness a wrest
ling match which failed on account
of not finding theiSt. Paul man.
Milt Latta and wife were in
town a couple of days this week.
Milt drives a good team and
doesn't take long to drive in from
Hackberry lake-
Mel Hale and wife were in town
Tuesday , visiting with Mr. and
Mrs. C. A. Pote. Another sister ,
Mrs. Spall of Simeon , was in town
a couple of days this week.
M. V. Nicholson returned this
week from Omaha where he had
been on the grand jury which con
vened Tuesday of last week and
adjourned Friday. Few cases
were investigated.
J. P. Ninas' baby has been Very
II the past two weeks and for a
: ew days recently there was Itttle
lope of recovery but the child is
now showing signs of improvement
and is considerably brighter and
this morning could ask for a drink
of water.
Katie King died at Hot Springs
yesterday morning and was
brought home this morning for
burial. She was the youngest
child of Thomas King and wife
who have had more than their
share of sorrow. Funeral is to be
held to morrow morning.
Edward Keyes and Miss Pearl
Jelly were married at the home of
her parents , Thaddeus Jelly and
wife of near Sparks , last Thurs
day. These young people have
the good wishes of a host of Val
entine friends. They go to house
keeping in the dwelling recently
purchased of C. A. Austin in Val
entine , formerly the Thackrey
home. t

yesterday on business.
Richard ' Osburn has jusfc re
turned from Oklahoras where he
has been visiting a brother.
jGreo. Tellier and Joe Jennett
came in from Newton yesterday
and Mr. Teilier called at our office
today and found the editor-in-chief
at his desk for the first time in a
year , so he handed in a dollar for
the paper and we marked the date
Jan. 1,1909. Who's next ?
Mrs. Dora Pease Knott is here
from Wyncote , Wyo. , visiting her
sister , Mrs. M. R. Harden , and
relatives. Miss Pease went out to
Wyncote a couple of years ago to
teach school and captured a ranch
already stocked with horses and
cattle , implements and a man
Mr. Knott , who has now sold
out and is seeking- new location.
In the meantime they will probably
reside in Valentine where they
will build upon lots owned
Mrs. Knott.
Melvin Roby was thrown off a
horse last Wednesday week and
was severely hurt. . He had been
down to Ernest Bowden's , riding
bireback and with nothing but a
hliter to guide or check with , and
when returning , met Mr. Herman ,
with whom lie stopped to converse
a few words , and unon starting to
go the horse began to run and
then to buck , throwing Mr. Rob.y
with such fores that his hip was
hurt and he has since been con
fined to his bed.
Mrs. Mary Moon and daughter
Queen returned Saturday night
from a three week's visit in Iowa
and Ohio , the early home of the
Moon's and Fenner's. Mrs.
Moon's father , John Fenner , re
turned with them and will visit
here this winter. They brought
paw-paws , persimmons , hazel nuts
and buckeyes home with them.
They had a pleasant visit and saw
all the fireplaces , bringing-home
one of the old family andirons of
the Moon home. The visit re
called all the pleasant memories of
the earlier days which were not so
long ago. The people still living
there have been doing well and
were glad to see the weary wand
erers of the western lands.

the Hutchison school.-
District No. 14 has been unable
to obtain a teacher.
Mesdamcs Tillson and Sorby
visited Mrs. Klein an3 Mrs. Or.
O. Hancock Friday. '
John and Harry Roberts from
Buffalo county , nephews of Mrs.
E. L. Hutchison are here visiting.
G. R. Burdick's little boy Philip
has been sick with scarletina.
Henry Hutchison fell and broke
his arm the first day of school.
A. W. Hutchison lost a milch
cow from eating green corn. Also
one of C. W. Hamar's cows left in
Roy Kuskie's pasture died from
the same cause.
Digging potatoes is the order of
bhe day. The yield is reported
lighter than the average.
Teacher's wages have gone sky
ward this fall. For those districts
ible to pay § 45 and § 50 per month
that have been fortunate enough
to get teachers of good manners ,
ind good morals , as well as good
learning , it is alright. But the
poor districts ! ! !
