SCHOOL NOTES Many school officers will be in terested in the following ruling from State Supt. McBrien upon STATE AID FOR WEAK DISTRICTS ! All that is required of weak districts that expect to come under the provisions of this law is that they vote , at/the annual school meeting in June , to hold at least seven months of school the ensuing \ ear , and also to vote school taxes i aii amount equal to 25 mills on ie aoliar of assessed valuation. VH such districts maintaining l&i''i ht grades are entitled to t i/ * * ssistance under this act when ap plication is made therefore by a majority of the district board and approved by the county superin tendent. It follows that where a school district voted the full limit of taxation and seven months of school aiid later it is found that the funds available will not be sufficient to hold that amount of school , it can hold a shorter term and still be entitled to its maximum share of state aid. Some districts without any outstanding debts may vote the limit of taxation , which , with the maximum amount of state aid , $120 , will not be sufficient to maintain seven months of school. A district may pay whatever sal ary is necessary to secure a first class teacher. It was undoubted ly the intent of the legislature to help the weakest districts most. It is impossiele to tell at this time whether the 850,000 appro priated by the legislature will give all districts the full amount to which they are entitled under this act. If the amount available is not sufficient to pay the full sum to which each district is entitled under the provisions of this act , it shall be divided pro rata among the several school districts entitled thereto in proportion to the ag gregate number of days attended by all pupils in the several dis tricts. It will take many school districts in this state , voting the limit of taxation , at least two years to pay their legitimate debts and current expenses by using all of their local funds , including state apportionment , which is no longer held exclusively for the payment of teacher's wages. With the state aid we hope that such dis tricts will be able to hold at least three months of school. In all districts apply ing for state aid this department ( state depart ment of education ) will hold that no expenditure of money shall be made by the district board without the consent and approval of the county superintendent. Every district desiring state aid should make immediate applica tion to the superintendent ol' the proper county. The estimate of probable amount each district will receive will be made about Oct. 19 , 1907. LULU KOIITZ , Co. Supt.
