out in the claims made for a new

The Iinocli-out Blow.
The blow which knocked out Corbett
was a revelation to the prize fighters.
From the earliest days of the ring the
knock-out blow was aimed for the jaw ,
the temple or the jugular vein. Stomach
punches were thrown in to worry and
weary the fighter , but if a scientific man
had told one of the old fighters that the
most vulnerable spot was the region of
the stomach , he'd have laughed at him
for an ignoramus. Dr. Pierce is bringing

As the result of a gunshot wound re
ceived when he was a boy and the sub
sequent surgical operation which fol
lowed Chapman had a teacupful or ,
to reduce the quantity to more exact

when he was 13 years old.
Instead of dying , as everything indi-
caeed he would , Chapman lingered be
tween life and death. His head was
almost frozen in an effort to keep the
temperature down. Part of the right
ear was actually frozen off in this
manner. But after spending two years
In bed , not being able to stand as a re
sult of the injury , he finally became
able to get around.
A huge scar remains where the sur
geons removed the skull and brain I'roin
Chapman's head. The brain substance
here lies beneath a single thickness of
skin and it is possible to observe the
pulsation of the cerebral blood vessels
by watching the bare skin which cov
ers the unprotected brain.
In sleeping if he lies on the right side
of his head it fills with blood , prac
tically drowning the brain. lie is then

HOW ENGLAND IS SHRINKING.
England does not look as large to
Americans of to-day as it did to our
great-grandfathers , nor is the reason
all to be found in historical perspec
tive. As a matter of fact , England is
really much smaller than it was in
their day , because it has lost thousands
of acres by marine erosion. Every year
the ocean takes heavy toll from "the
tight little island. "
It Is a long time since Ravenspur
was a name of meaning even to Eng-
men , yet in 1399 Ravenspur .was a large
and prominent city , more important
than the city of Hull is to-day. Henry
IV landed there In chat year , as Shake
speare notes. The city sent two men
to Parliament ; but like many other
towns in that part of Yorkshire , it
long ago vanished under the sea.
In the reign of Edward I , says a
writer In the New York Sun , Cornwall
measured fifteen hundred thousand
acres. To-day just half of that Is left ,
the rest washed away by the sea. It
Is said that between Land's End and
the Scilly Islands lie one hundred and
forty parish churches and villages. A
line of anchorage off Selsey in Sussex
Is still called by sailors "The Park. " It
won its name in Henry VIII's reign ,
when it was a deer park , famous for
Its stags.
Dunwlch , the ancient capital of East
Anglia , furnished forty ships to Henry
III , and was so powerful as to appall
the Earl of Leicester. A forest lay be
tween the city and the sea , but In Ed
ward IPs reign the sea engulfed four
hundred of its houses. In 1G77 comb
ers washed in the market-place , and in
1700 the great church of St. Peter's
collapsed into the sea.
More recently , In a single night , three
hundred thousand dollars' worth of
damage was done In the Kentish town
of Margate. Within the last decade
Sussex has lost three hundred nnd sev
enty-four acres to the sea , and other
counties in proportion.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars are
spent every year by the coast cities
maintaining seawalls and coast de
fenses , but every year coine storms
which tear these ramparts to pieces.
In a single night hundreds of feet of
granite wall will be torn away , the
massive blocks rolled out to sea or
thrown higher on the landand gaps
In the walk of defense established.
Trains of supplies are kept at proper
points to aid in repairing such
breaches.
A royal commission on coast erosion
has been appointed to study this whole
matter of invasion by the sea , and to
propose measures of more effective de
fense.
Still Waiting.
The guest was a good-tempered if
somewhat dull fellow , and his host did
not wish him to miss any of the good
things that were being said at the din
ner party.
"Did you catch that last joke ? " he
asked the young man , whose face wore
a cheerful but not too animated ex
pression as the fire of stories rattled
from side to side of the table. "The
one about the place where they had two
skulls of the saint one when he was
a boy and one when he was a man ? "
"No , " said the guest , "I missed that
one. I'd likfe to hear it now , If you're
good enough to repeat it. "

When he got home for the holidays
