The railroads have made a con cession to harvest hands of one cent a inile to and from the large wheat fields , in the interest of : i saving the crops. As a result of an article in last week's Holt County Independent Judge Barnes of Norfolk says he has given his attorney instructions to sue Geo. A. Miles for libel. The 25 per cent reduction in express rates was to take effect' July , but has been disregarded by express companies. The attorney general has applied to the supreme court enjoining -the companies from collecting the former rates. We have a letter from.T. . . S. ! Allen , chairman of the democratic state committee , announcing a ; meeting of the state central com mittee Thursday , July IG , at S p. m. , at the Lindell hotel , Lincoln , ' ' i and inviting other prominent . ' democrats to attend the meeting. The democrats of Cherry county will please consider this an invita tion to attend this meeting for tliej | purpose of consultation and con-1 j ference. In addition to this. , ] they expect to talk over plans for next year's campaign , and if pos- jsible , strengthen our organization. ! All leading democrats are invited to attend this meeting. Mayor Eugene Schmitz of San Francisco , Cal. , was found guilty of extortion in Judge Dunne's .court July Sth and was sentenced ; to fi ve years in the penitentiary ; at San Quentin. Judge Dunne j delivered a scathing lecture to 'Mayor ' Schmitz , which was re- j peatedly interrupted by the latter , , i stating that he was there to receive t his sentence rather than the lec ture. Schmitz's attorney was quieted with a threat of a jail sen tence if he should interrupt the court again. The sentence was received with wild applause by the spectators. Mayor Schmitz announced his intention to carry the case to the highest courts to 'vindicate himself , claiming that 'Judgt Dunne v. as unfair and prejudiced against him. m Greatest War in History.'ve ' It is already suggested that the withdrawal of the battleships of has the United States navy from the ly Atlantic to the Pacific ocean will . oc make ; necessary the building of a ye newjleet i for the Atlantic. Lower California , it .is rumored , is to be j and purchased of Mexico because of the harbor accommodations it will afford our war vessels. Large sums of money must be spent in the Philippines for fortifications aad navy yards. In the aggivgale hundreds of millions more are likely to be called for , and spent , for the navy , almost before we realize the meaning of the move ment. The war and navy departments of the great nations , charges Van Norden's magazine , are entered , in the race to bankruptcy. "The greatest war in history" is right now in furious progress-and com pared to it all others sink into in significance. But we do not fight with human beings ; we fight with gold. Says Van Norden's : Just now a treraemluous naval baclle is in process. Great Brit- ian and Germany are fighting hand to hand. No sooner does one build the greatest warship in the world than the other lays the keel for a greater one. Germany has refused to entertain the propo sition of disarmament and Great Britian immediately orders two more Dread naughts. These ships will in all probability never use their guns except for target prac tice. Their pc session by a nation means absolutely nothing but the ability to spend as much money as the ships cost. Indications are that the United States will be siezed with the madness of battle and enter the struggle. The inevitable result must be battleships costing 10 million dollars , and ultimate bank ruptcy of the nations. Vast arm ies of men are being detailed from useful occupations to wear soldier clothes and carry useless but mod ern rifles back and forth in idle show. Generation after genera- tion of "soldiers" is engaged in this ludicrous business of stand- ing in line with guns that will never be ured. The whole business of war is reduced to a financial absurdity. It is a serious strain on credit , and the men and millions engaged in it might be profitably employed in advancing the general prosperity of the world. It is absurd that the statesmen cannot see that there' will never be an end to it until they stop it. The way to stop it is to stop. But there is no sign that any body is going to stop. Instead , as suggested , the United States , the one great power that has stood for peace and against big navies and standing armies , is "seized with madness. " Our navy is the third in the world already , and wiU soon be the second. Secretary Taft declares that the army is more important than the navy , and should be placed at least on an equal footing with it. In a few years , if the tendency continues , we will be spending more money on a useless war estsblishment than any nation in the world. Is it trite to ask , "Whither are we. drifting ? Pabst Malt is richer in nutriment than other malts. 1 O' Xne Beer of Quality is a more healthful , wholesome food than other beers.
