Its History , Resources ,
Business Men and
Wealth.
From The Democratic
Blade , Issue of Jan. . ' 86.
Valentine is situated on lots 1 ,
2 , 3 and 4 , EJ-NWi , and EJSWi
sec. 31. tp. 34 , r. 28. The plat
of the town was filed for record in
Holt county , before the organiza
tion -Cherry. . The southern
half of the tract on which the
town is situated was entered by
D. Y. Mears and the other half by
Jas. H. Ray.
The town was surveyed arid
platted by Lieut. Macomb of the
5th U. S. cavalry. The town was
incorporated as a village in Janu
ary ISS-k In October 1882 , Peter
Bruhn built the first house on the
new townsite , where Thacher ,
Cornell and Go's , store now stands ,
and opened up a general merchan
dise store. J. P. Wood's house
was then standing on his claim ad
joining the townsite south , and
which has since been laid out as
Wood's sub-division of the town
of Valentine , Mear's arid Ray's
houses , in which they lived on
their claims , and work had begun
on the depot building previous to
Bruhn's house , but by some blund
er they got the depot in Main
street and had to move it. The
building now owned by W. H.
Carter , on Main street , as the
next to be erected , while F. H.
Warren soon followed with the
Green Front saloon ; Carry Bank-
son with a log building ; Turner
with the building now used for
sleeping rooms by the Ray House ,
and Carter with bis saloon. This
comprised all the buildings in
1882. Nothing more was done
until the railroad reached the town
in April 1883 , when the town took
a boom and quite a number of
houses were erected. The estab
lishing of the land office here in
July gave it another lift and build
ing coritiuned until cold weather
stopped it. In the summer of
ISSi , the court house and school
house were built and the town
doubled in size. The census of
last June gave the town a popu
lation of 700 , after the railroad
had been built a hundred miles
west of us and all floating tran
sient population had gone on , its
population would probably exceed
that figure now by about 100 , as it
enjoyed some growth during the
summer , notwithstanding the dif
ficulties it had to contend with.
AS IT is NOW. ( Jan. 1 , 1886. )
Such is a very brief statement
of the history of Valentine. We
find it today with a large two-
story court house and public
building , a school house with ac
commodations for three depart
ments , two of them now running ;
a U. S. land office ; an important
railroad station ; a freight house
for Rosebud Indian agency and
Fort Niobrara ; two newspapers ;
three general stores , represented
by Thacher , Cornell & Co. , A.
Truesdale & Son , and Sparks Bros ;
H. A. Thompson , clothing store ;
E. Elsey , grocery ; E. McDonald
and McCafl'erty & Connolly , hard
ware and furniture ; Bank of Val
entine and Cherry County Bank ;
Valentine and Ray hotels ; A. Col-
gan , B. Herr , and Mrs. Esbeck ,
restaurants ; A. Lewis and H.
Moses , drug stores ; Perry Lawson
and Geo. B. Fenner , barbers ; J.
G. Little , A. Hurlbut and George
Lang , livery stables ; P. Donoher ,
Fischer & Strickland and Tim
Higgins , saloons ; M. Gallagcr ,
blacksmith ; W. R. Fenner & Co. ,
boot and shoemaker ; W. H. E.
Fuchs , harness shop ; Stephen
Seifert , t tailor shop ; Carman &
Hornby , lumber yard ; Mrs. Smo-
linsky , bakery ; Stetter Bros. ,
mest [ market ; W. A. Crowley , gal
lery ; Sisler & Frankhouser , feed
milWm. / ; . Boggie and F. A.-
Hacker , carpenters ; H. Moshier ,
paper hanger and painter ; W. E.
Waite , cattle broker. The legal
profession is represented by Col.
A/F. Wilzocki , J. J. McCollister ,
J. Wesley Tucker , O P. Warner
and H. R. Bisbee ; the medical by
Drs. Alfred Lewis and IN. B. Ray.
BUSINESS DONE.
Valentine is not afraid to. show
the figures for the business done
in 1885. The business men have
furnished The Blade the amount i
of their sales for the year and it
aggregates the sum of § 336,526
sold by general , grocery and hardware - ;
ware dealers of the town. Drug
stores , saloons , harness and shoe
ihops , lumber yards , etc. , not be
ing taken into account , because
many of them were not obtainable.
All this business was done by the
three general stores now here , the j
two that moved away , one grocery ,
one clothing store and two hard
ware stores. Can any town show
a better record ?
RAILROAD.
W. G. Brown , station agent
here , has kindly furnished The
Blade the figures for the railroad
business done at this station in
1885. Freight received was 206-
94 , 277 pounds , onwhich the
charges on this road were $269-
026.98 ; advanced charges ( from
other roads ) § 16,266.22 ; miscel
laneous $12450 ; prepaid charges
$19,275.70 ; all the other charges
were collected here. Freight for
warded was 19,494,6S5 : pounds on
which local charges were § 17-
653.82 , of which there was paid
at this office § 10,520.18 ; advance
charges on this were § 18,441 83 ;
miscellaneous charges § 8,000. The
tickets sold at this office during
the year amounted to § 23,671.56.
This represents about one-half the
travel , as land 'seekers usually
p.orae provided with round trip
tickets. Receipts for express
reached § 6,789 59 ; for express for
warded § 1,792.59. Telegraph re
ceipts were about § 600.
