Mr. Bishop and son of Valen tine were in Sparks last Monday. Wm. Allen , Sr. , and Joe Bristol have lost about 50 head of cattle this winter. Dick Osborne lost two head of horses last week and lays it to the dreaded stalk disease. School was closed in the Bristol district for two weeks on account of the smallpox scare. Frank Grooms received a box of apples from eastern Nebraska recently. Lots of apples and liver now. Henry Grooms upset a load of wheat on the grade below the Al len bridge recently. Henry has lost several head of cattle in the corn stalks. Frank Johnson , of Iowa , and who formerly lived at Sparks , was here to spend.New Years with his parents and other relatives. He returned Saturday. Mr. iN'ewland ' , who has been sick for some time , grew worse a few days ago and a doctor was called from Valentine. At this writing he is no better. The smallpox scare has turned out to be a reality , A.aron Grooms' whole family being down with it. It seems that that locality has been pretty well exposed before it was pronounced smallpox. The telephone line running west from Sparks , which has been out of repair for three months so no one could talk to Sparks on line one and no connection with lines two and three , was repaired Monday night by lantern light and two and one- half hours hard work. We rejoice to be able to an nounce that the case which was t.'ied before the commissioners on Jan. oth , was decided in favor of ' 'no saloon at Georgia. " When this becomes the sentiment of every town in Cherry county , then we may look forward to happier days. Then , we as a county , will become a factor in the building up of a great civilization. We can never make America what we believe God intended it should be "A Beacon Light" to all lands so long as this wrecking , blighty , blistering , damning influence of the saloon is allowed to have its "right of way" in any community. We quote the following lines from the Nebraska Issue : "There is but one issue to this conflict. The day of Judgment is sure to come. Oppressed and suffering humanity must have deliverance and relief. The liquor traffic will be destroy ed. The American saloon must perish , for God is on His throne. In His matchless name no foe can stand before his federated church and united people. " Supt. Press Work. The Man Fish. Afathew Buchinger , mentioned in old English wonder books as the "man fish. " was the most remarkable mon strosity of his time. He had neither hands , arms , feet nor legs. From his shoulders grew two flnlike excrescen ces , and along his back there were sev eral rows of scales. He had the lidless eyes characteristic of the fish species and a queer' puckered mouth and no ears. . He had been contributing verses and short stories and bad just begun a tale about the soldiers on the frontier who suf fered with scurvy- The editor wanted the scurvy story for the morning pub lication , but Joaquin Miller could not concentrate upon his work , nis mind leaped to the anticipated joy of a great social function occurring that evening , for at this time he was a social lion. However , he had proceeded in his story up to the point of the conditional cure for the disease where all the soldiers suffering with scurvy had been buried , with only their heads exposed to view. The editor was yelling "Copy ! " The poet's mind refused to work. He could not finish the tale , leaving his soldiers In such a plight. Suddenly an inspira tion came to him. He grabbed his pencil and wrote rapidly the following words : "And a she wolf came along and ate off all their heads. " Then he made a bee line for the door and was not seen again until the next day. His story was not published. A Cause of Divorce. "What is the most frequent cause of divorce ? " the lawyer was asked. "It is nearly incredible , " he said , "but a thing that causes-divorce oftener - er than you'd imagine is married pee ple's quarreling over their rightr to open one another's letters. The hus band will claim that he is entitled to open the wife's mail. The wife will claim that she Is entitled to open the husband's. In the letters of neither will there be anything of a private or compromising nature , but nevertheless they both want to get their mail in violate it enrages them to have it opened and read. Quarrels over this letter opening question vex , I suppose , 90 per cent of married couples. Of this 90 per cent a distressingly large proportion go on from bad to worse till they wind up in the divorce court. So , young man , when you come to mar ry , leave your wife's mail alone , no matter how she may pry into yours. " New York Press. Quick Wit Saved His Life. "The strangest and most thrilling piece of swordsmanship I ever saw , " said the fencing master , "was in Ver mont. I was spending the autumn In a mountainous part of the state , and there was a military encampment near my hotel. One morning an officer's horse started to bolt with the man during parade and made at breakneck speed toward a precipice. The offi cer tried to stop the horse , tried to turn his head no use. On dashed the frantic animal straight for the abyss. We all held our breaths. In another Instant we expected to see horse and rider go over the cliff. But the officer when within fifty feet of the edge drew his sword and plunged It twice deep into the horse. The horse stag gered , slowed , keeled over , dying. The man had sacrificed the animal's life to save his own. " The Light That Failed. It was by an accident that Mr. Kip ling got his famous title , "The Light That Failed.
