The Sunday school is growing
in numbers and interest.
Strangers are especially invited
to attend all our services when
stoppiag in the city. You will be
given a welcome.
|
! The puzzle question for next
Sunday is : "Who was the man
! who caught 300 foxes , and , tying
j fire brands to their tails , turned
i them loose in the fields of grain ;
and why did he do it ? "
The morning service was not so
well attended last Sabbath as it
should have been. Doubtless
some remained at home on account
of the light fall of snow , which
should not have hindered anyone
from going to the house of wor
ship. Come out friends and let us
worship together. The evening
service was well attended and the
anthem by the choir was highly
appreciated.
C. E. COXXELL , PASTOR.
W. C. T. U. Column.
The regular meeting of the W.
C. T. U. will be held at Bethel
hall on Tuesday at two o'clock p.
m. As our state treasurer calls
dues ! dues ! so let the call come to
all in the local union who have not
paid up to September , as the time
will soon roll around when March
dues will be called for. Please
come in the spirit on next Tues.
The election returns show a
great increase in the number of
votes vast for the prohibition of
the liquor traffic. It is coming
can't you hear the rumbling ?
Think of the young recruits , from
schools where scientific temperance
instruction has been vigorously
taught for years , just on the verge
of voting age. Think of the vast
army of Loyal Temperance Leg
ion graduates coming on. Think
of the great world's convention
with representatives from 31 dif
ferent nations , reporting active
work along all lines of temperance
work. Prohibition sentiment is
spreading over every state and
territory of our own. nation , and ,
if all believers in righteousness '
would break ranks with the old
parties and join hands with those
who will ultimately win in our
final effort to dethrone king alco
hol this menace that has polluted
our fair land , lo these many -years
could be wiped out in one presi
dential campaign. The following
is quoted from Kev. Miss Shaw's
address before the great World's
convention in Boston : "Patriot-
ism ! What is it ? 'Is he a patriot
who says 'My country , right or
awJ T'
his country does , no matter what
it is ? He is a patriot who says
'my country if she is right , but if
she is wrong , then by every pow
er of my being I shall seek to
make her right. ' He is a patriot
who has learned the kind of pa
triotism our cause has taught us.
We began by saying , 'For God
and home and native land. ' ' Years
of toil and sorrow and suffering
taught us a broader patriotism and
now we write on our banner , 'For
God and home and every land. ' "
SUPT. PRESS WORK.
School Itfotes.
Miss Gordon spent last Satur
day and Sunday visiting her home
in Hot Springs , S. D.
While in Lincoln recently we
met Miss Leta Stetter who is now
principal of the Dewitt schools.
She reports that she has a very
pleasant work this year.
The Wesley an , the college pa
per of the Wesleyan University ,
is now on our reading table. We
notice that Clinton Collett is the
business manager and that he is
making a good college paper of it.
We met Supt. Hunter in Lin
coln at the superintendents' and
principals' meeting and he reports
3T
that Miss Bernice O'Keif is giving
excellent satisfaction in the pri
mary room of the Fairmont school.
Miss Bessie Gaskill , of the class
of ' 06 of the Valentine high school ,
has a place on the program of the
Northwest Nebraska Educational
association which meets at Craw
ford Nov. 30 , and Dec. 1. We
prophesy that Bessie will prepare
a good paper.
Most of the students from the
country , who were frightened
home on account of the diptheria
scare , have returned. However ,
there are four or five chat will not
return at all. Some who have re
turned are so far behind their
classes that they are having quite
a struggle to catch up with their
work.
The voters of Valentine pre
cinct showed their confidence in
their school superintendent on
election day by giving him such a
large vote for state superinten
dent of public instruction , regard
less of politics , and the superin
tendent fully appreciates this
mark of appreciation of his work
in the Valentine schools.
Miss Olive Bliss is assistant
principal in the high school at
Seneca , Wis. , and seems to be doing
v
ing nicely. She wrote to us recently - '
ently for a.declamation-for one of s
the high school boys to deliver at u
lt\
' pnfp.i'tflinmfnt. The school
notes in the Seneca paper last
week states that Miss Bliss had
just bepn out of school two days ,
attending the funeral of her aunt.
Purple and Gold , the Bellpvue
college paper , says that James C.
Quigley , who was on the staff of
that paper last year as local and
exchange editor , is this year one
of the associate editors and will
handle the exchanges and also ath
letics. The same paper says of
Alberta O'Kane that on entering
Bellevue college in ' 05 she quickly
made a name for herself as a good
student and that her literary abil
ity brought her a place on this
year's staff which she will fill
with credit.
We are very sorry that circum
stances have made it necessary for
Frank Fischer , who entered the
State University in September , to
return to Valentine to take his
place in his father's store. He
and Frank West and Alfred Lew
is seemed to be doing good work
when we met them in Lincoln on
Oct. 20. Alfred is now spending
his third year in the State Uni
versity. He has decided to length
en his course one or two years
more than he intended when he
first went 'to Lincoln. He will
thereby have a college degree as
well as a medical diploma when
he graduates.
