JULIUS SCIIROMM , 35 " Woodlake , Nebr. . .School Notes. Miss Carrie Stetter made a brief call at the high school Tuesday. There are a number of bright boys and girls from the country in school now and we promise to make the school mean something to each one who does a reasonable amount of evening-study and takes from nine to. ten hours sleep each night. We believe that never since we have been in Valentine has the school run with as little friction as it is running this year. However , we have more tardies than we should have. Parents could be very helpful to their children by be ing a little more sensative on this point. Miss Anna Hahu , with her par ents , made a brief call last Satur day and brought us four fine water melons. Such remembrances from our former students leave a pleas ant taste in the mouth. Anna has taught one week on her term and now feels like a full fledged "school- marm. " We have had inteiesting letters from Floyd Pettycrew , Prank Fisch er , Allen Gould , Nellie Oollett , Bes sie Gaskill , Nellie Basley , Clinton Collett and Olive Bliss recently. We certainly appreciate these letters , although we have bean too busy to answer them as promptly as we should. The tuition from non-resident pupils for Sept. this year was $10.50 against § 27 for the same month last year , and the tuition for Ojt. this year is ! ? 51 against § 22.50 for Oct. 1905. We understand there are still a few more non-residents planning to enter. The sooner they come the bettor it will be for them. Miss Anna Stetter and Mrs. Wat son will teach some of the classes in the high school while Supt. Wat son attends the Northeast Nebraska Educational association at Emerson on Oct. 13 , and the state association of superintendents and principals in Lincoln on the 18 , 19 and 20. Between the two meetings Mr. Watson will incidentally look after any breaks which may have occurred in his political fences along the eastern border of the state. Some More About Kansas. Of the 105 counties in Kansas , 85 are without a pau-per , 25 have no poorhouses , and 37 have not a criminal case on the docket. In Kansas , women have had full municipal suffrage since 1887. If during these IS years women had neglected their homes for politics as the opponents of equal rights prophesy that they will , hal : the men in Kansas would have been brought to the poorhouse by lack of thrift and domestic in dustry on the part of their wives , and the rising generation woulc have gone astray and filled the prisons to overflowing , for wan ! of motherly care. Just the opposite has happened. This is another illustration of the fact that "it is idle to argue from prophecy when we can argue from history. " When a bill was introduced a % year or two ago to take municipal suffrage away from the women of Kansas , no wonder it was voted down almost unamimously , and "amid a ripple of amusement. " ALICE STONE BLACK WELL. The W. C. T. U. will give an oyster supper at Bethel Hall on Oct. 19th. for the benefit of the Rest and Heading Koom. We so licit your patronagefeeling ifc is an enterpri/.e that all might be in terested in. According to Mrs. Callen's report the Reading Koom has been well appreciated this summer by visitors not only of our town but those coming from other places. In one instance , a little child belonging to an Omaha visitor was cared for by Mrs. Callen , which gave the mother an opportunity 'to see the town and attend to business to better advan tage and it also placed a little sum into our treasury. In this way the Best and Reading Room may be come a natural benefit to all who wish to enjoy it and we do not lesitate to ask the aid and co operation of the friends oi : Valen tine in this direction. The supper will be 25 cents ; strictly an oyster , with coffee , sup per. J ) < ) not forgeC Friday Oct. 10th. Rev. Connell and wife were . completely surprised last Friday evening by the members of his congregation who came in a body to give them a pound social. The evening was pleasantly spent in a social and musical program. A ' 'great many useful articles were left as mementos of the occasion. Mrs. Etta Pettycrew and Mrs. Stambaugh of Cody visited in the city over Sunday. The first quarterly conference of the Methodist Episcopal church of Valentine will be held in the M. E. church on Friday evening , Oct. 12th. Every official member is urgently requested to be present , as matters of importance are to be considered.
