RIGHT IN HIS TEETH.
The republican press of Ne-
'braska has been painting George
B Sheldon as an angel with two
harps , and at the same time trying
to make it appear that A. C. Shal-
Jenberger is a railroad devil with
two horns.
Mr. Shallenberger has been pic-
tared as a professional railroad
politician , and Mr. Sheldon as a
professional fighter of railroads.
Well , the two candidates for
governor got together on the same
platform the other day , down in
Syracuse , in Otoe county. And
something happened to Mr. Shel
don right then and there. Mr.
Shallenberger called attention to
.the charge that he was a railroad
man , and that Sheldon was a rail
road fighter , and then he made the
following open proposition to
Sheldon :
I WILL AGREE TO RETIRE EttOM
'THE RACE FOR GOVERNOR IF I
HAVE USED A RAILROAD PASS SINGE
JIR. " SHELDON USED ONE , PROVIDED
HE .WILL AGREE TO WITHDRAW IF
IT BE SHOWN THAT HE HAS USED A
PASS SINCE I HAVE.
Did Mr. Sheldon accept the
.challenge ?
Not much.
He crawfished , and did a poor
job of it , too.
Here is a fair picture of the t\vo
inch who are seeking the suffrages
of the people in the present cam-
' paign. When nominated forgov-
ernor Mr. Shallenberger frankly
admitted that he had used railroad
passes in other years , but that
some years ago he became con-
. ° - .vinced the pass business was-abad
'business , and that ever after he
liad refused to accept any such
favors.
* * How different the conduct of
* Mr. Sheldon. Very recently he
was a member of the Nebraska
legislature , and he carried and
used railroad -passes during the
session. No.w he accepts a nomi-
anation for governor and permits
the republican press to advertise
him to the world as a man so clean
that his own pocket has never been
polluted by a pass. He permitted
his own party friends to shame
fully lie about Mr. Shallenberger ,
hoping that he might receive
benefit from the lying.
But he is cornered now. He
must fish or cut bait. He must
.shoot or give up the gun. He
must accept the challenge hurled
in his teeth by Mr. Shallenberger
or be branded as a fake reformer
of the Norris Brown and Tige
Harrison stripe.
The coward conductof Mr. Shel
don is inspiring his own republican
followers with disgust. The bold
honesty of Mr. Shallenberger is
filling his friends with new ad
miration for the man , and new
hope for his success in the present
campaign.
An excellent authority once
said : "God hates a coward. "
The sage must have been thinking
of candidate Sheldon when he said
it. Mr. Sheldon has played the
part of a coward in this campaign.
He has permitted his party friends
to lie about Mr. Shallenberger ,
never raising a voice of protest.
He has permitted his friends to
brand Mr. Shallenberger as a
' 'railroad tool , " and then , when
face to face with his brave
opponent , he dare not accept a
challenge , the acceptance of which
would compel his withdrawal from
the gubernatorial contest in dis
grace. Fremont Herald.
Several republican newspapers
and speakers have been charging
that when the populists and demo
crats were in the majority in the
legislature nothing of importance
was accomplished. That the people
ple may know that there is no
reason for this statement we call
attention to a few laws that were
passed in 1891. The senate was
composed of 18 populist , S dehao-
zrats and 7 republicans. The
bouse was composed of 51 populist ,
25 democrats and 21 republicans.
Among other laws the following
were enacted :
A proposed constitutional amend
ment for-the - election of : railroa'd

commissions. An act to compel
railroad companies to name their
stations the same as the city or
village in which located , and to fix
a penalty for a failure so to do.
An act requiring all railroads , cor
porations , companies and persons
operating a railroad and doing
business in Nebraska to equip all
engines and cars with proper , ef
ficient and safa automatic couplers
and brakes , and for prescribing
penalties for failure thereof. An
act to create and regulate public
public warehouses , and warehous
ing , shipping , weighing and in
spection of grain. A concurrent
resolution demanding the immed
iate foreclosure by the government
mortgage it now holds against
the Union Pacific railroad. An
act regulating all building and loan
associations to do business under
the laws of Nebraska. The Aus
tralian ballot law. To organize
mutual insurance companies. Re
pealing the bounty for beetaugar.
For district ownership of school
books. For state and county de
pository law.
In 1893 when the populists had
13 in the senate and 40 in the house ,
the democrats 6 in the senate and
12 in the house , the republicans 14
in the senate and 48 in the house ,
the following bills were passed :
To compel railroads to put in
transfer switches. For the ex
amination of county treasurers'
office. To fix maximum freight
rates to be charged by the rail
roads. The Newbury bill. A law
to prohibit lumber dealers , coal
dealers and other persons forming
a combination to fix prices. Also
a law to prohibit Pinkerto.n men
doing police duty in the state. .
In 1897 with 17 populist , 7 demo
crats and 9 republicans composing
the senate , and 49 populisfc , 21
democrats and 30 republicans in
the house the following laws were
enacted :
To provide for fraternal , insur-
surance. To give additional pow
ers to a board of transportation.
To define trusts and .punish the
same. A concurrent resolution
that there be a committee on rail
roads to unite with Kansas , Okla
homa and Texas to consider the
propriety of building an interstate
railroad to the Gulf of Mexico.

A WARNING-
This country is not ready for
government ownership of the rail
roads and it is to be hoped it
never will be , but let those critics
of Mr. Bryan and those railroad
organs that have been thrown into
a state of hysterics remember this ,
if government ownership of rail
roads ever becomes a fact , the
railroads themselves will be the
prime factor to bring this about.
It is surprising how long the pa
tience of the American people is
and how much extortion they will
really put up with , but once they
awake to a full realization of the
highway robbery that is being
practiced , the obstacles now in the
way will be swept away with little
ceremony. Ten years ago when
government regulation of the big
corporation was advocated by W.
J. Bryan it met with a storm of
protest as did his suggestion of
government ownership and now
the former enemies of regulation
are its strongest supporters. It
all rests with the railroads as to
what the people will will do.
Norfolk Press , ( rep. )
For six years the republican
party has controlled the legislative
and executive affairs of this state.
They have made the appropria
tions , equalized the assessments ,
made the levies , collected the state
taxes , and speiit the money. They
have absolutely controlled the fin-
nances and must be held entirely
responsible for che low taxation
on railroad property , the high
taxation on all other property , the
increased state taxes levied upon
the various counties of the state
and the extravagant appropriations
made by the various legislatures.
In 1900 the amount of taxes
charged by the state board of
equalization for the maintenance
of state government was $1,208-
984.94 ; this year , 1906 , the present
state board ( of which Searle and
Eaton who are running for re
election formed a part ) have in
creased the state taxes to the
enormous sum of § 2,191,421.85 :
nearly a million dollars more. No
reasonable argument can be ad
vanced for this high taxation and
it is doubly aggravating when it is
noted that § 1,856,744.48 is con
tributed by all other property and
the balance is assessed and will
probably not be paid , but fought
by the railrads as in 1903 and later.
State taxes are steadily increasing
year by year , with no decrease of
the outstanding indebtedness.
Look at the figures as shown by
the state auditor's reports.

Walther R A , Meltendorff ,
Since the railroads have dropped
Governor Mickey from their list
of cligibles , Mickey is telling a
few truths that lets a little light
in upon the subject of railroad as
sessment in Nebraska. He says :
tklf the republican ticket is elected ,
I fear the railroads will have con
trol of the board of equalization. "
Wouldn't that jar you ? There is
not a ten year old boy in the state
that does not know that the rail
roads have had control of this
board ever since the new assess
ment law has been in effect. Mick
ey has worked with this board and
knows just what he is talking
about , and desires to warn the
people against what he knows will
be the consequence if the republi
can ticket is successful in this next
election. Yet , these members are
seeking an election upon an anti-
railroad platform and expect the
people to believe that the republi
can platform means what it says.
The republican party has always
been anti-railroad ; anti-trust and
a nti-every thing until after they
were elected to office and then they
seem to forget that they ever said
anything of the kind. Dear read

truth. Holt County Independent.
