An exten sive scheme of land frauds in gov ernment lands in the vicinity of Alliance , Neb. , was unearthed here today , and Patrick J. King , for many years the head "policy" promoter of Chicago , was arrested on a charge of being the ringlead er. For three months secret ser vice operatives have been at work in Chicago in connection with the existence of a company said to have organized for the purpose of llegally obtaining title to home steads in Nebraska , and today the first arrest was made on complaint of Secret Service Operative Rob- rt H. Ilobbs of Washington. Subornation of perjury was the specific charge on which King was arrested. Pie was arraigned be fore U. S. Commissioner Foote on bonds until October 4. It is charged that King , with a number of other men , has used aged civil war veterans and their widows to further their scheme of obtaining title to vast tracts of land in Nebraska. King is charged with having fraudently obtained title to seven sections of land from as many former soldiers. Agents of King are said to have persuaded former soldiers to file claims on land , after which they were induced to sign contracts to transfer the title to King. The prospective homesteader was then given railroad fare to Nebraska and his expenses paid. When title was cleared the land was turned over to King. The land filed up on is of little value at present and irrigation was relied upon to make the scheme profitable. King's case will have to be trans ferred to the courts of Nebraska for trial , because the alleged fraud was-committed there. King de manded and was given a continu ance. World-Herald.
