Miss May Barnes visited at Geo.
Tracewell's last week and went
down to district No. 28 , near
Sparks , to teach this fall.
Mrs. A. GL Shaw and baby
departed Sunday morning for
Shawano , Wis. , in response to a
telegram stating that her mother
was very ill.
Capt , Powell , of the 25th Inf. >
purchased Dr. Compton s line
driving team last week , the con'
sideration being § 325. The cap
tain intends taking them with him
to Texas.
Webb Hilsinger and son Harry

w ek from Shoshoni , where they
have been for two or three months ,
the former being on the police
force at $90 per month.
Ira Moore was driving a team
on the stacker when a cockeye on
the tug of the harness broke caus
ing the whippletree to fly back ,
striking him in the bowels and
causing almost instant death.
Long Pine Journal.
Mrs. Elmore went to St. Joe ,
Mo. , last Friday to purchase her
fall stock of millinery. She was
accompanied as far as Fremont by
her niece , Ella Smith , who goes
from there to her home at Hast
ings , having been visiting Mrs.
Elmore the past two months.
Henry Murphy drove up from
ranch 12 miles west of Brownlee
last Thursday and spent a day in
our city on business and visited
some with old friends. Tt isn't
often that he comes and-there's a
great deal to talk about nowadays ,
toso the time was well spent and
goes too quickly when Mr. Mur *
phy is here. He started home
Saturday afternoon , expecting to
reach home Sunday evening.
The M. E. Sunday school , under
the leadership of Geo. H. Hornby ,
gave a picnic down at. Deer Park
last Friday. Dinner was prepared
and placed on a long table con
structed for the purpose , seating
nearly 100 persons. Capt. Shaw
was there with his camera and
took a photograph of the group
when they gathered around the
table. ' Several rope swings had
been put up and the children en
joyed swinging and playing about
the picnic grounds the whole day
long. The older people also got out
after dinner and played "drop the
hand Kerchief" and swinging in a
rope swing. It made us all feel
younger as we played the games
that we played and enjoyed so
much 30 years ago. This Sunday
school picnic was enjoyed by sev
eral wagon loads of people and
will be a pleasant recollection to
those \vho attended.

J. W. Pike of Milnerville , la. ,
was out here on a visit with his
sons last week. He drove to
town with Ed. Tuesday and called
ut-pur office for a visit whileJn
town. Mr. Pike came to Cherry
County in 'Si and lived here until
a few years ago. He regrets that
he can't stay for the Old Settlers
picnic at Dunn's grove Saturday.
He expected to start home Wed
nesday morning and promised to
come oftener hereafter. It has
been two years since he was here.
His daughter and her friend who
have been visiting at Hot Springs
were expecting to pass through
Wednesday enroute home and Mr.
Pike will accompany them.
School Kote.s.
School opened Monday with an
enrollment of 270 pupils.
There are 40 per cent more pupils
in the ninth grade than have ever
been in that grade in Valentine.
The second grade has the next larg
est number of pupils of any grade
in school.
Miss Bertha Gordon of Hot
Springs , S. D. , takes Miss Blessing's
place hi the primary room , and
Miss Etta Schapper of Havelock
takes Miss Nelson's place in the
high school. The other teachers
are the same as last year.
