It is very doubtful whether there has ever been held , in the history of Nebraska , a democratic conven tion in which the people of the state , regardless of party , have taken so keen and personal an in terest as they take in the conven tion that meets at Lincoln today. Nebraska is under the yoke of republican misgovernment. The serious consequences of that misgovernment , the still more ser ious consequences that are sure to follow its continuance , have be come plain , at last , to a very large majority of Nebraska's citizens. Our state's affairs are in the hands of petty , unworthy and un faithful men. Their inexcusable extravagance has.plunged the state millions in debt in years of un paralleled prosperity. Within a very few years state taxes and ap propriations have doubled. The vast bulk of the increased taxes have been raised at the expense of the farmers , the business men and the small property-holders. Rail roads and other great and influent ial corporations have been granted immunity from the burden. In every department of govern ment the railroad and trust in fluence is supreme. Supine and corrupt officialdom has surrender ed the reins of power into the keeping of that influence. The legislature has bowed to it , defeat ing anti-pass legislation , direct primary legislation , and bills to reduce passenger and freight rates. The attorney general has yielded to it , refusing to enforce an anti- pass law now on the statute books , refusing to enforce the criminal laws against a grain trust the ex istence of which has been proved in court , and defending the out rageous course of a faithless state taxing board before the people of the state. That board has yielded to it , in taxing railroad property on a valu ation of 60 per cent , while compel ling other property to pay taxes on a basis of 100 per cent. The secretary of state has done its bidding , and a constitutional amendment , creating a railway commission has been placed in the gravest jeopardy. Every promise of Teform made by the republican party has been violated. Every important pledge SENATORIAL CONVENTION Ixotice is hereby given to the electors of the democratic party of the 14th senatorial district of Nebraska , that a convention will be held in Chadron , Dawes County , Nebraska , at two o'clock p. m. , on September 12,1906 , for the pur pose of placing in nomination a candidate for senator to be voted on at the coming election , and for the transaction of such other business as may properly come before the convention. The representation of the several counties , of ' said district in said - - ' * v convention will be as follows ; . Box Butte 5 , Brown 4 , Cherry 6 , Dawes 6 , Keya Paha , Eock 4 , Sheridan 6 , Sioux 3. S. S. JotCfi. Chm. Sen. Com , Notice. The Second Annual Kace Meet ing and Blooded Live Stock Show which is to be held at O'Neill , September 5th to 7th inclusive promises to be one of the most successful events of the kind ever held in north Nebraska. The society has offered § 1800.00 for speed purses alone and it is stated by the managment that an exceed ingly long list of fast horses have already entered , and , as the O'Neill track is known to be one of the best in the state , excellent racing is assured. Besides the racing and other sports a blooded live stock show is to be held during the meeting and a big blooded live stock sale to be held the last day which , will afford all an opportunity to buyer or sell anything they have to offer in that line , of its officials ha's been broken. Andjiow , with fresh promises on their lips , the "republican leaders and republican officials are making ready to ask for a new lease of power , expecting the people to be blind to their blackened record. Democracy's great opportunity is at hand. The people are looking to the democratic party for * relief. They will make it their instrument with which to hurl the insolent railroad bosses and their lying puppets from power , if only the democratic party will prove , by the stand it takes , by the candor and courage of its utterances by the character and ability of its candidates , that it is worthy to be trusted- Vast encouragement lies in the fact that democracy's case is al ready half proved. A party's trustworthiness is determined largely by the character of its leadership. The leader of the Ne braska democracy is a man so ex alted in his ideals , so pure and resolute and steadfast , so plainly committed to the cause .of the people ple in their struggle with monopo lies and trusts , that all the world is honoring him today , and the nation is preparing for him a re ception , when he returns from abroad two weeks hence , without precedent in American history. Sitting at the feet of William J. Bryan , it is not conceivable that the democracy of Nebraska would betray the people's trust and prove false to the interests of the state. But assurance may be made doubly sure. Let the party's pledges be so specific , let its nominees be men of such record and such established character , as will leave no room for doubt. And , however spirited the contests between candidates , when the convention has completed its work let all who sought its fav or , whether they lost or won , and let all democrats , regardless of what their preferences may have been , rally unselfishly and loyally about the chosen standard-bearers of the party , to help "them win the battle and , having won it , to car ry their party's pledges into effect. Let this be done , and the victory , which means so much more to us as citizens than it does as parti sans , is in sight. World-Herald. The democratic congressional cenvention meets today at Kearney , Moses P. Kinkaid was renominat - ed for congress by the republicans. W. S. Barker assumed that which he knew to be untrue in the defense of his preferred candidate , whom we will assume is so much to hisi i liking that he feels sore when some j one "assails the republican oandi dato. Lots of energy is needed to keep up the pace. In the struggle , the man with the strong body and clear brain wins out every time. The man of to-day needs' something more than mere food ; he needs a food that makes energy a food to work on. Although some people may not realize it , yet it is a fact , proved and established beyond doubt , that soda crackers and this means U51@edQ BiSCUlt are richer' in muscle and fat-making elements and have a. much Jiigher per cent , of tissue-building properties than any other article of food made from flour.
