Ames , editor and pro prietor of the Times-Herald at Hot Springs , S. D. , was killed by the cars late Saturday night , Aug. 5 , 1906. He had met a black Hills delegation at the passenger station and jumped on the train , which backs down to the freight switch yards , when Mr. Ames left the train and started across the main track toward home. The engine was backing down the track to get on the other side of the train , when he stepped directly in front of it and was run over by the ten der , one truck passing over his body. The account as given by the Lead Call in part is as follows : The engineer succeeded in stooping the engine within a few feet , but those few leet were enough to run Mr Ames down , and to intl ict upon him injuries which he survived but two hours. His injuries were horrible. his body being almost severed in twain , but despite the awfuluess of them he survived for about two hours and during that time dictated to his wife the disposition of his business and its future manap-iment. * * * Mark Knight , secretary of the lodge in this city , went to the Springs last night , and was present at the funeral as the representative of the lodge. The funeral was held at 2:30 : o'clock this afternoon , Rev. P. M. Smock of ficiating , and telling in eloquent words of the worth of the life which the deceased had lived. It was a ser mon which appealed to ail wh-j heard it. Ed had lived a clean life , was a good man in every community in which he had ever lived. The paper which he edited took from him its personality , and like himself , was true , honest and good , and we , of the newspaper fraternity , knew his worth and appreciated him as a man , and in every place in which a paper is pub lished in the Hills there has been murmured the prayer "Kequiescat in peace. " From a writer in the Times-Her ald we quote the following : The writer was awakened from a slumber Sunday morning , just alter the clock had struck the hour of twelve , by a messenger , announcing that Mr. Ames had been caught un der the wheels of an engine and was seriously injured. As we entered the C. & N. W. waiting room , we beheld his prostrate form lying on a cot , with his face bruised and his body mangled ; the lustre had gone from the eye and earthly hope from the heart. We took the cold and feebly responsive hand and thought of him as we had . * ren oim only a few boms beforr , all life , vigor , ami in the flu * h of his mature manhood. 'Twas then we realized how true it in that the only certain thing about life is its absolute uncertainly The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon. An hour before the time announced for the services to begin , the church was packed from pulpit to sidewalk. During the ser vices , hundreds of people waited pa tiently outside to be permitted to get a last goodbye look upon the face of their friend. The funeral music was most fitting. Mrs. Crow , of lead , sang ' 'Face to Face , " and Mrs. C. W. Hargens sang "Thv Will Be Done. " The I. O. O. F. held their beautitul ritualistic ceremonies at the grave. From all over the state is appear ing extended accounts in the news papers of Mr. Ames' death and in variably the editors close by express ing a feeling of personal loss to the fraternity. Thus the earthly llf * * of our friend and brother has closed. His sun has gone down while it is yet day. The columns are closed ; the forms are locked-a ; Die-hearted brother has left this transitory sphere to join the ranks on the other side and take his place in the invisible circle of the immortals. A tragical shooting aff air occured in Gordon last Sunday night about 9:30. : Ben Trueblood had taken Miss Maggie Bylstra to church and had just returned leaving her at the hotel door and going across to Eebbeck's restaurant. Asa Walls had been going with the girl for some time and was jealous of the other boys , and was lying in the hotel office waiting for their return , and as the girl entered the office he arose and spoke to her. A slight scuffe followed and Walls pulled a gun and shot her. The bullet entered the left side just in front of the collar bone striking a rib and glancing out making a wound about 6 inches long. The girl rushed into the room of Mr. and Mrs. Abbott saying that Asa Walls had shot her and he was so close to her when he fired the shot that her clothing was all afire , which was put out by Mrs. Abbott. After the shooting Walls stepped 1 out in front of the hotel , looked j around a little , went around the south side of the building and dis appeared. * * * Dr. Dwyer was summoned to dress the wound and said had it been half an inch higher it would have proven fatal. Also City Marshall Lambert was aroused but nothing was found of their man that night. All the towns around were telegraphed and ranches phoned to be on the outloofc for Walls. The next morning he was arrested at Rush ; ville by Sheriff Kipplinger. * * Walls was bound over to the district court. The Gordon Jour nal.
