Stead men are \ the happy parents of twin boys born Monday , July 30 , 1QOG. * Miss Gertude Jordanv departed Sunday morning for Hot Springs South Dakota for a few wee'ks. Mrs. C. Beeman arrived n' re from ' St. Paul , to visit her mother * Mrs. Dan Hubbard and.other' relatives. Whitney's Celebrated Bioscope Pictures will show at Church's Opera house Thursday evening , August 16 1906. Mrs. Ruth Shore returned home Monday from Nordon , where she has been visiting her cousin J. A. Logan and family. Miss VanBuren , after visiting a few days with her friend Miss Margaret Simpson , returned to her home near Cody. Mrs. Bivens and two children returned home Wednesday morn ing , after spending a few weeks visiting friends in Sioux City. A week ago last Sunday our lo cal base ball team went out to the Schlagel and were beaten by the Schlagel team ib a score of 10 to T. Sunday afternoon the lightning stuck two miles west of town ? arid splintered four telephone poles and tore the wire loose for some distance. A government inspector con demned and killed four head of J. W. Stetter's horses last week at Kellogg's ranch on the North table. The horses had the glanders. J. H. Miller brought in a fine sample of new potatoes last week which he raised on his homestead southwest of town. They were the finest we've seen this year. Monday the Valentine base ball team went up and played the * Crookston boys and were beaten by a score of 8 to 6. What's the matter with our city boys ? Can't they play ball ? Miss Agatha O'Shuughnessy was home last week , and returned Thursday to Beatrice , where * she has a position as stenogragher and book-keeper in the institute for the feeble minded. D. J. Drebert has been in town since Sunday , expecting to travel out in the country , representing the German Mutual Fire Ins. Co. , of Omaha , with I. M. Mr. Hooton had been in poor health for several weeks past , and recently went to Hot Springs for treatment and -to try the baths for his ailments. No relief was obtained and he grew steadily worse , resulting in a telegram" being sent last Wednesday , week , that all hopes were given up for his recovery and he was brought home Thursday. , His death occurred last Saturday August 4 , 1906 , of stomach , liver and kidney trouble. Funeral services were held at the hotel , of which he was the pro- pr&or , Sunday at 4:00 : p/m. , con ducted by the Rev. Wells , for the old Soldiers and members of the A. 0. U. W. of which he was a member and , carried § 2,000 insurance. John Alexander Hooton was born at Ogden , Ind. , October 22 , 1847 , and was nearly GO years old at his death. , He was married to Margaret A. Perry at the above place October 6 , 1875. Mr. Hooton served four years in the Civil war , Co. B. , 139 Reg. Ind Inf. Vol. He came to Yalen- % ' tine'in the-fall of 1896 where the family has since resided.
