I D. Stinard received the sad news
of the death of an older sister at
Mount Vernon , N. Y. , several
days ago.
Rev. Wells , accompanied by his
daughter Miss Claudia , made his
regular trip down the road to visit
unoccupied parishes.
Misses Pearl Carey and Kath
leen Keeley returned Tuesday
from a two weeks visit at the
Rosebud boarding school.
S. P. Todd and brother-in-law ,
Mr. Smith , were in town yester
day. As yet they have heard
nothing from their missing brother.
Walter Brosius and Mrs. Thom
as Fowler , who are seriously ill
with typhoid fever on north table ,
are holding their o , vndth the
dreaded disease.

G. E. Trace well returned Tues
day from Moville , Iowa where he
disposed of a car of horses. Jim
Galloway , who also took a car ot

this morning , having stopped ofl
at Tilden.
During the storm yesterday af
ternoon Lew Ganow's house was
struck by lightning. The bolt
went1 in an open window and out
another. In front of one of the
open windows sat .three normal
students. Two were quite badly
shocked.
Miss Orvilla Carey returned
home yesterday morning from
J Pryor , Mont. , where she has a
government position. This morn
ing she and her mother , Mrs. O.
D. Carey , left for an extended
visit with relatives in Edwardsville
and Hicksville , Ohio.
Dr. Walter Tucker , who is sta
tioned at the Crow agency in
Mont. , arrived in Valentine last
Saturday for a short visit with his
brother John and family and to
renew old acquaintances. The
Doctor is away on a vacation and
ntends going farther east to spend
the remainder of his vacation.

CRAT James C. Quigiey again be
comes city editor of this paper.
Mr. Quigiey has served his ap
prenticeship in gathering news
and is now used to the business.
He will be responsible for the local
news , and , if anything is wrong ,
he will be pleased to correct it.
Tuesday , the Merriman marshal
brought two boys , Masters Dick-
son and Cory ell , each 11 years of
age , down to Valentine and tried
to turn them over to the authori
ties on the charge of burglarizing
several stores at Merriman and
Gordon , and were bound over to
the county court by a justice of
the peace. No complaint haviug
been filed here , they were turned
loose , for , on account of their ex
treme youth , the county judge had
no jurisdiction. The parents of
the boys were here and took them

Congressman Kinkaid spent
Sunday in town , reviewing the
local political situation. He left
on the first train through , and if
any freights had been running he
probably would have left sooner.

Eev. D. E. Hatch of Leon , la. ,
was in town the latter part of last
week and held several services on
the streets. He is a Seventh Day
Adventist and believes in the per
sonal missionary work as the best
method in reaching men. Al
though blind , he is really a re
markable preacher , seeming ex
ceedingly earnest , having a good
voice and excellent delivery.
Several weeks ago , while build
ing fence , Len Parker unfortunate
ly run a barb into the palm of his
left hand. Mr. Parker came to
town at that time and had his hand
which was pretty badly swollen
when he arrived here , dressed.
After returning home blood poison
set in and Dr. Compton was called
out to the ranch several times.
Len was in town Monday , and
though looking pale and his hand
badly swollen yet , seemed to be
getting along nicely.
Friday night the belated freight
train No. 82 broke in two as it
came down the grade. The engi
neer noticing the break backed up
at a lively rate , striking the back
part of the train with such force
that the occupants of the coach
were badly bruised and shaken up.
J. A. Stewart , a civil engineer of
Deadwood , and in the employ of
the C. & N. W. , was thrown from
one side of the car to the other ,
receiving a bad cut on the head.
He was brought to town and his
head sewed up. It seem that a
coupling had broken a few stations
behind and , instead of properly
fixing it , the trainmen had merely
chained it together , and while go
ing ut a high rate of speed it be
came loosened , resulting in an ac
cident which might have been
worse than it was.

School work is moving off nice
ly. Most of the students are do
ing good work.
We have heard many words of
praise concerning the lecture given
by Supt. McBrien on last Thurs
day evening.
On Monday evening , July 16 ,
Strickland Gillilan will give his
noted humorous lecture. Seats
will be reserved at Church's store
Saturday , July 14 , and Monday
July 16.
The enrollmeiit has now reached
133. Only IT more are necessary
to make the 150 which we prophe
sied would be in attendance this
summer. We are very sure these
17 will come in due time.
The committee on junior picnic
have decided to have said picnic
on Saturday , July 28. This will
be a grand time for persons from
a distance to visit the school , as
they may attend the entertainment
to be given by the Dunbar Bell
Eingers on Friday evening , July
27 , and then go with us to the pic
nic down at the Perry Falls.

John Poye has quit work on the
road and gone to work for Dell
Query. Mr. Poye bought a three
year old mare from A. Peterson last
week.

The Woodlake Cornet Band play
ed in Johnstown on the 4th. The
boys just received their uniforms
the morning of the 4th and consequently
quently were in good spirits during
