Sam McAlevy was in town the middle of the week. E. W. Thode of Stearns , S. D. , was in town Thursday on business. P. H. Young of Simeon came in Wednesday to attend the Masonic lodge. Mrs. K. Peterson called last Saturday to pay another year in advance for THE DEMOCRAT. Too much Fourth of July ! Yes , and job work also , causes THE DEMOCRAT to be a day late this week. State Supt. O'Brien is in town visiting the junior normal. He seemed greatly pleased with the work this'year. Jim McClean was in town from the reservation last Saturday to meet two of his children who had been away to school. Last Thursday afternoon Com pany L of the 25th Infantry came up and beat our local base ball team to the tune of 22 to 7. Miss Ada Milk and little sister came up from O'Neill Wednesday night to celebrate the Fourth with their cousin , Miss Elma Mills. Mrs. James Irwin , who return ed a short time ago , from an Oma ha hospital , was in town Thursday and is feeling a great deal better. Richard -Taylor and wife , and Mrs. Mark Wilson came down from Irwin the first of the week to visit relatives and friends a short time. Mrs. Gk A. Chapman and son returned from a several weeks visit in the eastern part of the state and in western Iowa Sunday morning. , John Bachelor went out to his ranch Thursday to set his large haying outfit in motion. He ex- expects to cut over 3,000 tons of hay before snow flies. Grandpa Haley went out to John Bachelor's ranch Thursday morning to help during haying. Though well advanced in years the old gentleman is very spry yet. Miss Alice Gaskill has been ser iously ill at her home , a few miles west of town , the past two weeks. She is suffering from nervous prostration , but is at present re covering. Philip McLean , who has spent the past month visiting at the home of his -parents in this city , left for Washington , D.C. , Thurs day morning where he assists in the office of a patent attorney. R. M. Faddis came down from Cody last Saturday evening. He had just returned from Texas where he purchased 1000 head of two and three year old steers. The cattle were turned loose on the reservation. The latter part of last week John Neiss , of the reservation , brought down 10 wagon loads ol hogs. The first of this week he brought down four more loads , al of which were sold to J. W. Stet- ter , one of our local dealers. . P. H. Young went down to C H. Faulhaber's ranch last weel and bought 23 yearling bulls , ( two-year-old bulls and 58 higl grade cows and calves. The bull : are thoro-bred stock advertised b : Mr. Faulhaber of the Loup -Valle ; Hereford Eanch , in this paper Mr. Young is trying to grade u his stock and feels lucky to gc -this fine addition to his herd. 4 ? The band boys gave an open air concert on Main street last Friday evening and one Monday and Tues day evenings of this week. At each several selections were ren dered which were much appreciat ed by the large crowds present. J. A. Whitmore , representing Bellevue college spent Saturday and Sunday in our city. He se cured two new students for the school this fall , and jollied up the old ones until they feel that they must go back. Several others are planning to attend the college this fall , if circumstances are such that they may. John Haber is carrying the mail between Valentine and Kennedy , * having the contract for the next four years. John had the misfor tune last week to be pretty badly nicked by a horse in the face and on his left leg. Though somewhat disfigured and a little lame , he manages to get around and took harge of the mail route Monday morning. . A quack M. D. , that hails from some place way back in the woods of old Kaintuck , appeared in town ihe other evening , fastidiously dressed in a fringed bucliskin coat , top boots and wore a six shooter which he could handle with in- reditable ease. Just what con nection his revolver had with his medicine we do not know , but one method is probably about as quick as the other in relieving one of their worldly troubles. In the course of his introductory talk he said that he would celebrate with the boys on the Fourth and spend the rest of the time catshing bass down on the pond. One of Val entine's bright youngsters stand ing" "in the front row finished his remark by adding : "Yes , and catching a few suckers in town.
