The U. S. weather report for
week ending May 30 : The daily
mean temperature 52 ° shows a
considerable falling off , averaging
8 ° below the normal. This will
probably retard crop growth. The
highest temperature was 73 ° and
the lowest 32 ° . The precipita
tion was 1.73 inches , giving a total
of 10.17 inches for the year to
date.
In the fastest game of ball play

Thomas Fitzhenry died dropsy of
at the home of Mrs. Shore in this
iy | ; $ arly Tuesday morning , after
several week's illness. The-many
friends of the deceased speak in
high praise of him as a neighbor
and a citizen. He is an old timer
here and made his home near
Chesterfield. He was a great
reader and a well informed man.
Honest , upright and a faithful
friend and neighbor. We are sorry
ry that he is gone from among us ,
and as a faithful man to the last he
passed away on Decoration day ,
that we might include him with
nation's dead and remember him
each year as we decorate the graves
of departed heroes.
Campbell Bros , circus came to
town Sunday morning , and , after
unloading and putting up their
tents , ' put in the day resting up.
Our people were surprised to find
such a large show and so many
people with it. Monday was
cloudy and chilly weather but people
ple came in from the country from
20 to 50 miles distant to see ! the
show and there was a good crowd
despite the threatening weather.
The sho.w was good and Campbell
Bros , are credited from Valentine
for conducting a clean , moral , and
up to date show. Their Cossack
riders , racing , dancing horses and
other performances were good and
many new features attract the
public eye.
The annual reception of the
alumni was held last Friday eve
ning after the graduating exercises.
On account of the disagreeable
weather there not as large an a.t-
tendance as at former receptions
there being only eighteen old
alumni members and the fifteen
graduates , and a few visitors pres
ent , making a total of about forty.
After a short speech by the presi
dent to the class of ' 06 they were
initiated and duly sworn as mem
bers of the alumni. After their
health had been drank by all pres
ent , Miss Bessie Gaskill of the
class responded with a toast in
which she expressed the appre
ciation the class felt.for the alumni.
After those who wished had im
bibed again , Prof. Watson ad
dressed them b y appropriate
speech after which they dispersed.
Punch was served during the eve
ning.
