A. M. Artewiue has been in this
locality hunting posts to fence his
claim.
"Visiting over the telephone" has
been up hill business the past week
so news is scarce.
G. W. Burge and John Adamson
went over to Simeon recently to
buy some Hereford bulls.
A new high line will be built from
Adamson's to Bush' * and it is hoped
better service will be had.
N. J. Grooms and daughter , Elsie ,
and John Groorap , Jr. and family of
Sparks visited E. Grooms last week.

\Vm. Palmer has a phone on
the fence line.
Will Shelboinn has moved onto
the Huhbard farm.
Henry Fowler has moved to his
farm near Crookston.
Ernest Coggswell nas moved onto
his father's place near the military
reserve.
Thomas Fowler and Gill Shaw
think of establishing a private line.
Wonder why ?
Grant Perkins will put in a phone
to connect his ranch with his par
ent's residence.
Mrs. Dave Fowler is very prouc !
of her new neice , daughter of Ernest
Bowden and wife of Kewanee.
*
Dave Fowler is one of the new
ones on the fence line and thinks
he could not get along without a
phone.
ClydePettycrew has been a pleas
ant visitor at his father-in-law's ,
Thos. "Fowler's , while down from
Casper.
It IIBS been a long time since my
pencil has been able to scribble a
few items. We were not sick but
constitutionally tired.
Ask Jay Fowler and Bobble Ash-
burn haw they like playing for a
dance at Norden ; rather the roads
before the dance commenced.
All is quiet this way except the
telephone bells. Ask Dan Jb'owler
how he likes to answer a midnight
ring. Dan enjoys the phone im
mensely.
Charley Fowler'd horse died a
short time ago. He misses Jack
very much. MORAL : Boys don't
ride so fast or so far between rest
ing spells.
St. Patricks Day dawned clear and
I think the good old Saint has driv
en the blizzards back to their lair
just as he did -the snakes from old
Ireland , though perhaps he has left
a weak one behind , as tradition says
he did one snake in Lough Pear ,
crying to all , "has tomorrow come
yet ? "
Soon the birds will be singing , al
so the hunter's will make bullets
and shot sing and wins tie through
the air as they seek a rest in the
soft breast of our feathered friends
ris they fly to their old nesting and
feeding places in the north. Some
of us will enjoy the dainty feast of
roast duck , or perhaps a goose.
A pleasant surprise was given to
Dave Fowler on March 5th , the 10th
anniversary of his marriage to Dol-
C lie Archer. It also chanced to be
i John Granger's birthday , BO both
w
were celebrated at the same time.
A bountiful supply of oysters and
other good things were served for
supper. Only relatives were pres-
eii , . \et a large crowd was there. j s
I .vender if the WC. . T.U. ladies
of Valentine ever thought to provide - j i
vide a place where farmers and oth-1
er men might get warm and sit
down to visit for an hour or HO
with the late periodicals to peruse
at pleasure after a long drive
; hrough the cold and storm. No'
such place is to be found even for
; hose who do not care to go to a ;
saloon. Merchants do not want
iheir places of business filled with
men who simply want to warm and
chat about business matters of the
day. We know of men who go io i
saloons only for the reason that I
; here is no other place for them to |
go and rest and warm , and talk ov-
jr topics of interest to men only.
Jadies and citizens : Provide such
i place , and fewer of our husbands
and young sons or brothers will go
to saloons where temptations are
on every hand , such as our county
uthorities are now trying to put
JOWH. Give us a free reading room
incl ITS * " voom for our men wh n
ihey visit Valentine , and my word
: or it , that fewer will go to question
able places of resort. If you are
not able to do so , why not state the
ase to some one of a benevolent
mind Andrew Carnegie for in
stance. Just tell him of the need
and what a crown of glory he may
receive , and I think , as in other
places , he would lend a helping
hand. Taks away the saloons if you
will , and can , but give in place a
clean place of resort. I say CLEAN
in every sense of the word , or some
thing worse than an open snloon
will be here. "A word to the wise
is sufficient , " and I could go on for
a long time in this strain.
