Women and girls are employed in the manufacture , and uonie of it is very expensive , for a year may be required to make a single piece. The linen or silk is placed in a frame , the threads are drawn out one way , and with a needle and the finest pool thread the design is worked. Perfilado is taught in the public schools. Among the articles made are handkerchiefs , tablecloths , bedspreads and covers for chairs or lounges. A letter from John ShelbournJr. , at Grand Island says about a foot of snow fell there recently. Valantine can't stay in the lead always. A prairie fire near Norden Wednesday entitles them to a burnt district. t The telephone seems all the go in this locality and the ringing of thejbell makes one think of taking b , si'eighnde. Mary Jaquins has been very low for several weeks past and does not improve very fast but we hope for her recovery. Frank Thompson went down to Nordeu Thursday , driving his np horse which he purchased of W. T. Bishop of Valentine. Frank Grooms lost a package of oats and one of coffee on the road , and new everybody is joking him about his scattering precious seed along the way. Henry Grooms is building an ad dition 16x28 to his house. Mr. Maxwell of Valentine is doing the carpenter work. Henry is making preparations to put in a phone. I. 0. Jories , of Winside , Nebr. , was here recently looking after his real estate interests in Cherry and Keya Paha counties , returning home last week by way of Valentine to close up some business transactions there. Dave Hamar says has solved the ' sparking" question and advises everybody who have girls to order a , phone. He thinks it would save about $75 a year in , the way of board , fuel , horse feed and midnight oil , while the phone only costs § 22 a year.
