Obituary.
Rev. Samuel Woodson Holsclaw
was the first child born to John
and Tabitha Holsclaw near Louis
ville , Kentucky , August 20 , 1829 ,
and thus was 76 years , 4 months
and 9 days old at the time of his
death , which occurred at his home
near this village , Dec. 30. 1905.
On December 27 , 1842 , Mr.
Holsclaw was married to Miss Re
becca Conyer in Dearborn county ,
[ ndiana. In 1851 they removed
to Monroe county , Iowa , remain
ing there until April , 18S6 , when
they came to Valentine , Neb. ,
where they have since resided , ex
cepting three years which was
spent at Springview where Mr.
Holsclaw served the M. E. church
is pastor.
Mr. and Mrs. Holsclaw had sev-
? n sons and a daughter , all of
tvhom are living except the eldest
son. Mrs. Holsclaw preceded Mr.
Holsclaw to the spirit world less
: han two months ago. A large
jircle of relatives and friends in
jhis community and others mourn
jhe loss of this good man.
In his his early life he was con
certed to Christ , and for many
years he has been a faithful ser
vant of the Master , serving as a
minister of the Gospel , and doing
much to spread Bible holiness.
Here at Valentine he preached the
first sermon ever preached by a
Methodist , and first organized the
Methodist society. He had serv
ed in the capacity of a pastor of
the church in a number of other
places in Iowa and Nebraska. Being
prominent in the movement of re
form in the morals and society of
our land his loss will be felt.
Rev. Samuel W. Holsclaw died
at his home west of town last Sat
urday morning of erysipelas after
an illness of only one week. His
sickness was serious from the first ,
since he was getting old , and the
recent death of his wife had griev
ed him much. During his illness
he talked of her ia his delirium
and seemed to be with her at times.
The funeral was held Monday at
2 p. m. in the M. E. church which
Rev. Holsclaw built several years
ago. Rev. Royal D. Waterman
and Presiding Elder A. R. Julian
conducted the services. The body
was laid to rest beside his wife
who had FO recently gone before
him , and there they sleep together
as they had lived in life.
