James Hudson handed us a $ Tuesday while in town , which pays his subscription in advance. Frank Curry shipped 263 head of fine native heifers Monday night which he sold to a man up the road. James Hughes , of near Sparks , was in town Tuesday with a load of corn and handed us a dollar for 52 issues of THE DEMOCRAT. Amos Randall has promised to give us a sketch of his trip to the mountains recently and tell of the places of interest that he visited. Our friendYm. \ . Young , of Simeon return ed home last Saturday night from a trip down to his old home in Missouri on account of the death of his brother. Miss Agatha Shaughnessy de parted for Lincoln yesterday morning to attend the state uni versity the coming year. She will take a business course. G. W. McFarland and S. Curtis Gordon and their families depart ed last Monday night for San Francisco , California , where they expect to reside in the future. TV. A. Parker and Wash Honey were up from Woodlake last Sat urday. Mr. Honey tells us that he enjoyed a splendid trip to Den ver and seeing the sights recently. W. A. Bonser returned Monday morning from Plot Springs where he had been for a couple of weeks bathing in the limpid waters of the plunge bath and resting under the pines by cool Si loam's shady rill. Adam Smith and John Burnett returned from Omaha last Firday where they had shipped several cars of cattle. Mr. Burnett called to pay his subscription before re turning to their home on White River. It is common talk that E. C. Cole , the county assessor of Cher ry county , through his influence over his deputies by virtue of his appointive power , secured the nomination for county treasurer , of his brother-in-law , W. D. Arm strong , of Cody. The Holt county Agricultural Society will have a race meet Oct. 4th to 6th at O'Neill , Neb. A good program is promised and some fast horses are expected , both trotting and running. Miss Maud Tracewell departed Monday for Grand Island where she takes a course in business col lege. Miss Tracewell is a bright young lady and has been teaching school in our county. We predict success for her. Anton Trapple came down from Georgia Tuesday and we noticed his arm in a sling under his coat. | lie says a horse fell with him two j weeks ago and broke his collar bone in the fall. He was running some horses when his horse put its front feet into a post hole and turned a somersault. The horse was not hurt. The friends of Miss Bculah Mumaugh , now of New York City will be glad to learn of her safe re turn from Europe , where she has been perfecting herself for the pas ! two years in the Gorman and French litiiinnj s , arul to knoxv that she has entered upon 'her duties as head instructor of the German department in the First Pennsylvania state normal school of Millersville , Pa. Jimmy Ashburn , * . the 13 year old son of James L. Ashburn , liv ing 12 miles northeast of town , had his right arm broken by his horse falling on him. He was out riding when his horse ran into a badger hole and fell , throwing the boy and fell onto him. The horse was so badly hurt that he was un able to get up and lay on the boy several hours before Mr. Ashburn discovered him. The boy did not seem badly hurt otherwise. The Ludwig Lumber company has secured the contract for fur nishing the lumber for the new passenger depot. They also se cured the contract for furnishing the material for the rebuilding of K company's quarters at the fort which are now being rebuilt. This speaks well for Valentine business men who are able to compete with eastern contractors and also in- cidently a point in favor of our C. & N.V. . Ily. officials for patron izing home institutions. Col. G. E. Tracewell , our popu lar auctioneer , returned Monday morning from an extended trip as auctioneer for the Standard Cattle company in their numerous big sales. The Colonel visited Lincoln and Omaha and went to Denver i with the great crowd between sales during his absence from home. Col. Tracewell has been employed as an auctioneer of 1800 head of cattle to be sold at theYyoming state fair under the management Russell Thorp and William Reyn olds. Dave Wishart , George Tobien and Misses Britton and Hocnig drove out to Schlagcl falls Sunday for a picnic , taking their dinner along with thorn. Thoir team strayed away during tlv dn.and . at night could not be found and the party were obliged to stay out on the prairie in their covered car riage over night. It began rain ing about dark and rained consid erable during the night which ad ded to the uncomfortablcness of remaining all night lost on the prairies. It was a cold night and the girls shudder at the thought of another night on the prairies.
