Eepublican politicians tried to
keep the populists from fusing
with the democrats at Lincoln on
August 10th but they fused. Wat
son and Tibbies tried to keep the
populists from fusing but alLto no
avail. Watson made a great speech
in the populist convention and
talked until he staggered but failed
to prevent the populists and demo
crats from nominating the same
men for state officers.
It is the avowed purpose of the
democrats and populists to elect a
state legislature that will elect W.
J. Bryan to the U. S. senate. Now
will the republicans give us anoth
er whoop for Bryan ? He was the
man who had the courage of his
convictions you know. He was
honest too and we want him in the
senate. The- republican papers
can't take it back for they have al
ready said this of Mr. Bryan.
Now everybody pull together for
W. J. Bryan. We like him too.
The republican party is follow
ing its old course in praising the
minority party. They are ready
now to take the populist party to
their arms and praise Watson and
Tibbies as being the great men of
honest convictions. They made
all manner of sport of populists
several years ago as the know-
nothing party and with such stig
mas as pops , popocrats and demo-
pops they laughed and joshed
many of the populists out of the
party. They told the populists
that they had been swallowed by
the democrats in 1896 and were
loud in their praises of the demo
crats who bolted and voted for
Palmer and Buckner. By the
way you never hear tell of Palmer
and Buckner since then.
How much better it would pay
each merchant who hires clerks if
he had enough customers to keep
eack clerk busy nil thn time. Why
notsp end $25 a muut/li advertising
your goods and make sales better ?
Each clerk will sell-more goods in
the same length of time. Custom
ers come from other places to buy
where others buy. Goods well
advertised are half sold.
* * Have each clerk look after the
bdds and ends that always accumu
late in a store and close them out
before there are too many frag-
njenfcs or remnants , A clean store

is . one where the stock is kept
fresh by closing out remnants ,
odds and ends and the dead stock.
Advertising will bring customers
for what you have to offer. Some
will want the new stock while oth
ers may need only that which some
leave. /
If you do not tell the people
what you have for sale , do you
suppose that they will know all
about it ? You would tell them
while you are waiting upon them ,
but they might be in a hurry or
you might be tired and forget it ,
or if you tried , you perhaps could
guess a dozen times for each cus
tomer and wear out seven sets of
lungs in talking that you can hire
a newspaper to do for less than
the price of one set. It's cheaper
and a more courteous way of do
ing business. It is the business
way of earning a dollar. It is the
the way a live merchant makes a
dollar as honestly as a , farmer
raises corn. He-works for it , and
gets it because he finds a customer
for what he has to sell. Both are
made the better for the transact
ion and it is as honorable as preach
ing the gospel. '

tWe , thejdemocrats of Nebraska ,
in state convention assembled ,
hereby reaffirm the principles of
democracy as asserted by Jeffer
son and Bryan , , and approve the
platform adopted by the democratic
national convention at St Louis.
"We pledge our hearty support to
Alton B. Parker and Henry G.
Davis , the nominees of that con
vention.
"We point with pride to the
splendid record made by our dis
tinguished fellow citizen , "W. J.
Bryan , and take this opportunity
of again expressing our apprecia
tion of his steadfast devotion to
democratic principles.
"We denounce the republican
state administration for its sub
serviency to railroads and other
corporation influences ; for its ex
travagances in public expenditures ;
its carelessness in the management
of state institutions and its utter
disregard of the public interests.
"We promise a careful and eco
nomical administration of the
state's business to the end that the
people may obtain the best possi
ble results at the smallest possible
expenditure of money.
I
j "We favor the enactment of s
law that will effectually prohibit
lobb3Ting in the state legislature ,
i in county boards or in town or city
councils. The penalty for the
violation of such a law should be
imprisonment in the penitentiary.
" "We promise the repeal of the
Eamsey elevator law and the en
actment in its place of the Brady
i elevator bill , a measure framed in
i the public interest and defeated by
itho republican legislature at the
, behest of the elevator trust.
i k' We believe in the dignity of
| human labor and cordially commend -
| mend labor's effort to benefit itself
i by wise and conservative organ-
: ization.
"The prompt repeal of thepres-
jent iniquitous revenue laws is de-
| rnanded and the enactment in lieu
thereof of a'law in strict accord
ance with our constitution levying
a tax by valuation so that every
person and corporation shall pay
a tax in proporation to the value
of his , her or its property or fran
chises. In determining the value
of railroads and all other public
f ranch ised corporations , whether
jstate or municipal , the rules of the
supreme court should be adopted ,
namely , the sum of their debts
represented by bonds and floating
indebtedness should be added to
the market value of their stocks.
"We charge that the present
revenue law was enacted to de
tract publio attention from the
ruthless extravagance resulting in
more than 82,000,000 state indebt
edness contracted in violation of
the constitution and by subterfuge
removing the -limit of levy that
the people might be further plun
dered.
"We assert that an econorai
and honest administration of state
government would leave our state
free from debt and a decrease in
taxation.
"We recognize in the life and
works of the immortal Lincoln an
examplification of the true spirit
and lofty purpose of the republic
and believe there should be erected
to his memory in bur capital city
honored by his name a monument ,
and denounce as unpatriotic the
efl'orts of our present chief execu
tive to thwart this laudable purpose.
"We invite all.voters regardless
of party affiliations to aid us in
j
rescuing our fair state from the |
blighting effects of republican ;
misrule. "
Our ready prints furnish one-
third of a column write up of the
Democratic state convention this
week , whereas they gave a whole
column and brilliant account of the
republican state convention in the
issue of May 26. This is discrimi
