Last week everybody and his brother were in town to take a 6iO acre homestead or see who else got j one , but this week all is quiet. People are buying new potatoes ! in candy sacks and carry them home ; in a coat pocket , or. carefully take them home as they would a box of strawberries. The crowd was a jolly one and all bad a good time despite the' ' e rain that came in the evening , but Mr. Swain tells us that they moved p furniture all into one 'room of his b .louse and those who stayed for g ; he dance took possession of the si louse , and spent the time in merf 1 ry making and dancing. Mr. Swain tells us that they will have another dance at his house Friday night , July 15- and invites his a friends to come , ' at \ I Dell Whipple aid ; wife came in from Kennedy the fir st of the week to celebrate. Old Uncle Paul called at our of fice yesterday , and , in his hand held a small package which looked like it might have been a package of nuts , but , it wasn'tChistmas .time , and , realizing our bump of curiosity < was as large as ever , he told us that he had bought two pounds of potatoes. The opening of Gregory county JS. D. , Tuesday , caused a lot of i people 1 to go there to get a claim. A lot of marshals , well and heav ily armed , are sworn in to preserve order , and gambling of all kinds is tolerated , so we understand , At Bonesteel about 300 persons were in line all night in the rain July 4-th waiting to file. Notaries who were present to make out homestead 1 filings were allowed but 25c for their services. A lot of notaries were not allowed to act , as not having complied with the officials requirements. Tlie ITourtli tit "V \Long before the 4th the cannon packers , toy pistols and poppers of all kinds made life a burden ( o all nervous constitutions. At a time when tired persons sought repose , the cannon crackers arous * ed them with a jump , startled persons - sons who were writing and those who had settled down to quiet con versation were caused to jump as the thundering noise of a big cracker came suddenly to their ears. It's all but pleasant unless you know when the thing is going to roar. Sunday night the boys began to make the night air hideous and early Monday morning the cannon crackers awakened at an early hour j ! those who had intended to sleep * and there was no more sleep until the next night. The people were about early and followed the band j down to the grove , a mile west of town where an excellent program awaited them at the grand f stand. Speaking , singing by a ladies quartet consisting of C of Misses Holcomb , Lally , Petty- crew and Easley , and a male quin tet by Profs. Beatty , Gregory and Bradford , Rev. Clark and Wesley Holsclaw. The program was said to be splendid. The band boys had nicety pre pared the grounds and rope swings amused some , while others walked around or seated themselves in the shade where they could enjoy rest and a good quiet time. Af ter < dinner was over the band played a number of fine selections and was applauded heartily by some ' , while others gathered around the stand until one could hardly wend his way through the crowd. The ball game was announced to take place upon the hill and a large number went up to see the Sparks nine play against Britt. Only three innings were played whvn the rain 'drove them from the i field. The score was even , 2 tallies each. Many got home be fore the rain and others found shelter under the canvas at the grand stand and other places until they found conveyances home. It was a gala day in which the people for miles around came to enjoy themselves in the good old way. The little boy with the toy pistol was there and the bigger boy at the cane rack or shooting gallery. A splendid refreshment stand furnished our wants and they were kept busy. A telephone wire was put in connected with central office and one could talk down town.
