Clapp of Simeon was in town Tuesday on business and called to pay his respects to the DEMOCRAT and a dollar in advance. Mr. and Mrs. M. Y. Nicholson returned lost week from several days visit at Omaha and at other places in the eastern part of the state. The 4th of July will be cele brated at Frank Higgins' grove. Misses Maud and Mary Van- Orsdoll , of Sioux City , accompani ed -isy blisses Mary Anderson and- Anna Gimmer , of Plankington , S. D. , arrived Wednesday of last week for a visit of a few weeks at Pike Bros , ranch near Crookston. The Misses YanOrsdoll are rela tives of the Pike brothers. Andrew Koralewski came down from Nenzel last Friddy morning on business. He says that a great many of the Nenzel people will take advantage of the new homestead act. Mr. Koralewski made us a pleasant visit while in town and we credit his subscription another year in advance to THE DEMOCRAT. The premium book of the Xe- braska state fair at Lincoln , Aug. 29th to Sept. 2nd , has reached our desk. If there is anything our readers would like to know con cerning the fair they can learn by writing Eobert W. Furnas at Brownville , Nebr. , . who is the sec retary of the state board of agri culture. Mrs. McXare , Mrs. Harden and daughter Francis and Miss Laura M. Stratton , of Lincoln , visited at our office Tuesday while in town. Miss Stratton has been visiting at Mrs. McNare's at Arabia for the past month. She taught school in the McNare district a couple of * years ago but was called home on account of sickness. Mr. and Mrs. Mat Jelly called a on the [ editor Saturday while in town to hand us another dollar In c advance for the DEMOCRAT. Mr. | Jelly has recently purchased a cream separator for his wife , and Mrs. Jelly says she couldn't get along without it and sells butter v with much less labor attached to a making it than the old way ; . w Walter Jackson returned home a last Friday night from his trip s back East , visiting relatives and d visiting the World's fair. Mr. 1 ; Jackson says they enjoyed a de lightful trip but he was glad to i ] get back home where he feels better and thinks he enjoys better a health than in Chicago. Mrs. Jackson remained in Illinois for a visit of a few weeks longer. A < WW > l L. JNr. Layport is putting down a new brick sidewalk in front of his residence. Claude Jones returned last Thurs day night from his' trip to the Worlds fair. Didn't stay long. Claude likes Valentine better , but thinks St. Louis is a pretty good twwn if there wasn't so many strangers. A new base ball club has been organized with the following of ficers elected : Dr. A. K" . Compton - ton , manager ; E. H. Eobertson , secretary ; 0. Gorrill , captain , and B. Shaw , acting captain. The boys are practicing diligently and will play their first game under the new management , at Eosebud , Saturday , June 25th , for a purse of § 10. TheIArabia Dipping Co. that has been recently organized with , C. McNare and A. W. Peterson it the head , has been doing a rush ing business during the last fort night. Cattle are being dipped on ; he wholesale plan , nearly 1100 3eing dipped in one day. The clip ping vat has proved quite an at- ; raction and at the noon hour the cene is one of festivity with the workers , their friends and fami lies ; eating picnic dinners under the shade of a canvas tent tent. The company expects to suspend operations this week. The charivari hoodlum crowds also infect other towns and make the night hideous upon the occur rence of a wedding in the town or whether it occurs elsewhere and the couple come to town. Last .week. there were two wed dings one evening and during the progress of Quincy LeeMorrow's lecture at the M. E. church the sounds of the hoodlums came to the church , diverting the attention from the lecture. There are a lot of fellows who go to each charivari as though they were a licensed mob to hold up newly1 married couples. At Ham McCrea's place last week , three weather boards of his house were split by the batter ing or kicking. Tin cans are used as missiles , fire crackers , shot guns , pistols and anything else that will make a hideous or grating noise are used in great glee by the hood lums , and , the city marshall tries to keep as far from the scene as possible so as to give the boys free passport to go to extremes , if a mild storm and general fusilade fails to bring the victims out to pay for a keg of beer and a box of cigars. Often severe means are re sorted to and a promise of the boys to keep it up all night if their vic tim refuses to "dig up. " And this is civilized America ! Is there no redress for these piratical par ties and will our married men who have passed that part of life that endangers them to like sufferings' , lift no voice or hand to put a stop to such barbarous customs ? JWill our preachers continue to civilize India , Turkey and China and turn deaf ear to their HOME AXD NA TIVE LAND ? Eiotous mobs who congregate for the prevention of legal ( and honest labor are not worse than these younger bands of pirates who demand tribute from those who from an ancient custom were made to "dig up" or treat as a new clerk , a new school teach er , a newly married couple or as new member of some society or secret order. The courts have de- dided that these riotous mobs are law-breakers. The officers of our country are keeping and encourag ing a new force of young rioters by permitting these charivaris and and the Hollow E'en depredations. Why not law and order , instead wild recklessness , disorder and I destruction of property ? m * * + tote to tote to tote to tote to tote to tote to tote to tote to tote to tote © tote to tote to May be had by using"Canned tote Goods.
