NEW HOMES IN THE WEST ill ill ion Acres of Govern ment I aiulM to be Opened to tlic ISomeateacler. . Almost half a million acres of government land in the Kosebud Indian Reservation , in the south western part of South Dakotaand one and a half million acres on the Shoshone reservation in Wyoming , are to be opened for homestead settlement at an early day. Reg istration for the Rosebud lands will probably begin August S and the final allotment take place a month later. The Rosebud reservation lands are well watered by the Mis- aouri , Niobrara and White rivers and are situated in the great corn beltwhere adjacent farmlands are selling at from § 25 to giO.OO per acre. The region that is to be opened is reached by the direct line of the Chicago & North-western R'y. from Chicago , St. Paul , Min neapolis , Sioux City , Des Moines , Omaha , Fremont , the Black Hills and other points in the west , through to Bono toel on the eastern reservation border. , The Shoshone or Wind river res ervation is in uie high platear lands of central Wyoming , bound ed on the south by tne Wind river and on the north by the Owl Creek mountains , while the Big Horn drains the eastern portion of the lands that are to be opened. These lands are to be reached via the Chicago & North-western R'y. to Casper , thence by stage to Lander , or via the'Chicago , Union Pacific and North-western Line to Rawlins. The treaty has been made by which the Shoshoue lands north of the Wind river are to be opened to settlement , and awaits early Congressional action. Government lands of good quality are much scarcer than they were at one time and the interest evidenced by this announcement of new lands to be the settler is very great. A heavy movement westward of those who desire to avail themselves of the United States homestead act will doubtless begin as a result of the announcement that these lands are to be opened.
