When will the people of our
country be considered free ?
Is it wrong for people to criti
cise our judges , our president and
our legislators ? Should people
drink it all down and pronounce
ife good , no matter how corrupt ?
Isn't it about time that our great
tribunals get down to the level of
common sense in the interpretation
of our Haws ? Think of the absurdi
ties that arc practiced by those
who are suppose to be the learned
men of our nation.
The liberties claimed be men ,
"clothed in a little brief author
ity , " enable them to be the great
est transgressors of law , and why
are they not the real criminals , if
they , by their acts , make criminals
free ? In the great tribunal , will
they not have to answer for their
conduct ? It is to be regretted that
we havn't greater assurance that
they will be held to account for
taking advantage of so called tech
nicalities.
Some of the republican harpies
are making much ado about Roosevelt
velt compelling the clerks in Wash
ington to work a fall seven hours
for a day. It looks like there was
not much in our president worthy
of praise if they can't say any
thing more for him than that he is
the tribunal that decides how long
the clerks of Washington must
stay at their desks. Tell us some
thing that Roosevelt has really
done for the masses of the United
States. What has he done in op
position to the trusts ? What has
he done with the coal mine owners
and what has he done to prevent
strikes ? Tell us something that he
has done that really Roosevelt is
entitled to credit for as president
of the U. S. that has not been com
mon with other presidents. Why
is it that the Trusts and combina
tion of capital do not like him ? He
has never harmed a hair of their
heads nor cost them a cent. He
has never done anything that has cut
a penny's worth of their business
off ; nor has he opposed them in
any way , except the usual repub
lican bluster about what they are
doing for the common people and
how they are curbing the trusts.
The trusts and capital fear Roosevelt
velt because of his spasmodic ac
tion which they declare make him
an unsafe man at the head of our
government. They say that he is
not conservative and that his reck
lessness makes capital unsafe any
where. When we look back to the
time when farseeing statesmen
and men who planned the develop
ment of the West and carried their
plans into execution with such
wonderful success , we are inclined
to think that we have entirely "ost
sight of such men and statesmen
at the head of our government of
tody and simply have slave driv
ers wlio have nothing to do , noth
ing to be praised for , but to act as
a slave driver and say how long a
government clerk should work.
