Dietrich would not be condemned
by the republican press today were
it riot for the fact that a republican
can be put in his place who will
lend more dignity to the state and
distribute the patronage of his of
fice with less charges for his spec
ial services and give some of the
other fellows a chance to make
something.
"We notice one of our exchanges
making a howl about most of our
weekly exchanges being more than
ordinarly weakly lately while that
journal is making a great furore
smoothing things over for Smoot
by saying that others are bad.
Smoot is a republican in congress
and it seems that it makes a dif
ference to some people as to what
a man's political belief is whether
or not he should be turned down. If
Smoot had been elected by the dem
ocratic party he'd have stood no
show atall and every republican
sheet would have been loud in their
denunciation of him , especially if
there was any chance to seat a re
publican in his place. O ye hypo
crites for political supremacy who
are always ready to stand by the
infamous in your parties name and
are never found ready to cendein ,
excepting for political reasons or
some aggravation or selfish pur
poses.

Will Donoher and wife stopped
over a day here last Saturday
morning on their way from Park
City , Utah , to New York City.
From there he will go to London ,
where he will enter the Royal Eye
and Ear Hospital , to take a course
in that institution , after which he
will visit Eidelburg , Germany ,
and several other places before he
returns.
The boxing contest which takes
place on Saturday night , the 16th ,
in Sears' hall will be well attended.
It is generally commented that the
contest will be fair and refereed
by a man who understands ring
rules. It is Valentino's opport-
tunity to see an exhibition that
will be out of the ordinary and
such opportunities do not come
often. Get your tickets early.
The concert given last night at
the M. E. church by the 25th Inf.
band was well attended. The
music was good and highly appreciated - '
ciated by those present , each select
ion bringing a hearty round of
applause. Some selections had to
be repeated before the house would
become quiet. We were not sure
in all cases whether it was the
quality or excellence of the music
or Prof. Safranek's popularity
that brought such outbursts of ap
plause.

a good time.
Some miscreant fired a shot in
t
the church the night of the Christmas - J
mas tree at Sparks. Those know
ing the guilty party should step
forward and tell what they know
for the sake of our community. If
this case is not prosecuted what
kind of an impression will be left
on the young boys of our neigh
borhood ? An investigation should
be started at once and the guilty
party brought to justice and dealt
with according to law. These shoot
ing affairs have been carried on too
far. Recently the mail box on the
road west of Sparks belonging to
Will Myers was shot to pieces , and
the patent U. S. mail box belong
ing to the Foster Bros , was badly
torn up by the use of a revolver.
In one of these cases the guilty
party is known to be from Valen
tine , and the other , evidence points
to our own community and in the !
next violation , prosecution will
follow.

One of the most interesting feat
ures of Friday's program was the
discussion of the question "Re
solved ; That the products of the
factory is more important than
those of the printing press. " The
pupils as well us the visitors thor
oughly enjoyed the spirited con
test. The decision was -awarded
to the negative.
The Christmas tree exercises was
a decided success. Many pupils
were present. After a well ren
dered program , Old Santa Glaus
distributed presents with a lavish
hand. Great credit is due the
children giving the program , but
especially should praise be given
to the ladies whose efforts made
the event possible.
