Dickson and Douglas
Men at War ,
Republicans Find that
Timber for Judicial Ticket
is Not so Plentiful ,
Among the rich things that have
occurred in politics in the districl
was a conference held at Bassett
by' certain republican leaders f01
the purpose of deciding who should
be nominated for district judge
from the east end of the district.
It was really a conference be
tween the friends of E. R. Dicksor
of O'JSTeill , and J. A. Douglas o :
Bassett.
THE DEMOCRAT is advised of the
names of some of the gcntlemei
who participated in the discussioi
of the c andidates and their . tron <
and weak points , but desiring note
to mix up unnecessarily in person
alities , we shall simply designati
the friends of Dickson as "Dick
son men" and the friends of Doug
las as "Douglas men. " Here i :
about what occurred :
Douglas Man : "We are strong
ly in favor of the nomination o
Mr. Douglas for district judge be
cause we think he is the stronges
man. "We think ho can be electe <
and we know that Mr. Dickso ]
cannot. Mr. Douglas has a gooi
record as county attorney and tha
would be in his favor , and , we ca :
afford to be candid here with eac :
other at this meeting. We cannc
hold the republicans in line for
man with the record that Mi
Dickson has. I know some of th
things that are record evidence. "
DicksonMan : "Well , you mus
understand that Holt county ha
the largest vote in this district an
in fact polls about one-third of th
vote of the district and unless Mi
Dickson is nominated you cannc
get much work done for the part ,
in that county. Mr. Dickson ha
been a hard worker for the repul
lican party and while he may hav
some weaknesses so has Mr. Doug
las. Mr. Douglas was a membe
of the last legislature and wa
characterized by all the newspap
ers as a railroad tool. He is cred
ited with taking an active part i :
passing the new revenue law , and
everyone knows that that was
measure in the interest of the rail
roads , and , in regard to Mr. Dick
son being dishonest much of tha
is political talk. "
Douglas Man : "So far as th
railroad matter goes Mr. Dickso ]
is just as close in with the railroad
as Douglas and closer too. He am
his family ride on railroad passe
his father-in-law Johi
and so does - -
Skirving and all of his family
But , gentleman , you failtoanswe
the serious charge that the repub
licans of this district , if they nom
inate Dickson , will be considere <
as indorsing Mr. Dickson's dis
honest acts , and , to speak plainl ;
we may just as well tell you ther <
are many of us that will not stan <
for him. "
Dickson Man : "To what par
ticular acts of dishonesty do yoi
refer ? "
Douglas Man : "Well , it is no
if
necessary to specify all of them
If he is nominated the populist
il - will do that for us. But I happei
to know personally that Mr. Dick
son stole over § 1000.00 in tax sal <
certificates from Holt county ii
the Barrett Scott administration. ' .
know that the county board can
celled these. I know futhermor *
that a law-suit was brought to tes
t *
rd
the question whether he stole the
certificates or not and that Mr.
Dickson filed papers swearing that
he owned them. I know the case
was tried before Judge Kinkaid
and that the judge disregarded
Dickson's oath and found that
Dickson stole the certificates and
he entered a judgment cancelling
the certificates. This a matter of
record in the district court of Holt
county. "
Dickson Man : "I doubt the
truthfulness of that statement. "
Douglas Man : "I know it is
true and in order to settle it let us
telephone to Judge Kinkaid andl
will pay the cost of the telephone
message if Judge Kinkaid will say
he did not find that Dickson swore
falsely in his pleading or that he
did not find that he stole the cer
tificates or that Judge Kinkaid can
celled the certificates on the ground
that Diukson stole them. "
Dickson Man : ' 'You are preju
diced. "
Douglas Man : No , I am not.
but I am telling you what will be
said against your candidate and you
dare not deny it. Not only thai
but you know that Dickson was
mixed up in the Barrett Scott mat
ter and that the populists have rec
ord evidence of where he not onlj
stole tax sale certificates , but coun
ty money. And you know thai
he has never prosecuted a cattle
thief , but it has been charged tha
he defended them and divided U ]
the profits from the sale of tin
stolen property. I personally
heard this charge made against hin
in Holt county by republican
some years ago. "
The conference was about to ad
journ when a gray headed old mai
who had been very quiet up to thi
time jumped to his feet and said
"By gimmeny christmas I knov
something about this man Dickso ]
myself. He got deeds to a tow ]
site at Hot Springs , S. D. by mis
representation and fraud. He wa
indicted up there but by legal de
lays he got the case put off. Th
people there on two mornings as
sembled at the station at He
Springs with a rope to hang hir
and would have hung him if he ha
been brought back there. Th
United States court at Deadwoo
finally cancelled Dickson's deed
and decided that he stole the proj
erty and taxed all the costs agains
him. This is record evidence
This indictmeLt still stands agains
him. Can you deny this ? Can w
deny it if Dickson is nominated
Suppose we nominate Dickson an
he should go to Chadron in th
campaign and a South Dakota oJ
ficer should cross the line and tak
him up to Hot Springs \vher
would we be ? "
Dickson Man : "Well , you
man Douglas is a prohibitions
and all the saloons in the distrk
would fight him and Dickson coul
get a part of that vote anyway an
Dickson will run well in Holt COUE
ty and that is the big county of th
district. "
At this point a motion was mad
to adjourn , but was voted dow
and a Douglas man was proceedin ;
to say that only one-third of Did
son's record had been told. Thi
was too much for Dickson's friend
and they made for the door. I
was locked but they promptly
kicked out a panel and got on
while the Douglas men were dis
cussing Dickson's record , and
thus the conference came to an em
without deciding who should b
the nominee.
