TEA ROOT CARVINGS.

The fantastic wooden objects which
conic from the far cist ar.d are known
as tea root carvings have icng been the
basis of a prosperous industry in the
populous city cf Fuchau. Strictly
speaking , the name is a misnomer.
Some of the carvivss are made from
old tea roots aiul tea trunks , but the
vast majority , nine-tenths at least , are
made from the roots and trunks of
hardwood tr es.
The carviis-fre : almost invariably
made in two parts , a pedest : ' ! avl one
or more human figures fittc'l to the lat
ter by prrrs and holes. The former is
ir.adc from a root and the Litter from n
trunk. The roofs are selected with con
siderable care. They must be compara
tively free from dry rot. decay and
worm holes and must possess a rude
symmetry. They aie ck-an d. scrub
bed and scraped : nd Hawed to about

The simplest design is a three legged
pnuest : 1. cf which the base is a rough
, cylinder of wens and Inobs. Any num
ber cf legs may be u ed. A curious
specimen rcrn by the vrriter in the
Grand hotel. Yokohama , his fifty legs ,

to suggest a horny ccntiped. A second
