on us while in town last week and

Harry Downing and wife left
last week for their home at Orch
ard in Antelope county. Harry

Mr. Gilman's claim , near Crooks-
ton , to put a fence around it.
A May basket social will be held
at the Harmony school house Sat
urday May 9,1903. Ladies please
bring supper ior two , also a small
May basket. A cordial invitation
is extended to everyone.
Geo. 0. TTeisflog and family
were up from Gresham , Nebr. vis
iting with relatives west of town ,
last , week. They are running a
confectionery store at Gresham
and are enjoying good.health.
If party who borrowed or found
my tin case , with reels and fishing
tackle , will return the same to me ,
will pay liberal reward and no
questions asked.

John Hittle , of Penbrook , called
on us last Thurday while in town
on business and handed us a § for
another year in advance to THE
DEMOCRAT. Mr. llittlc is getting
along in years but is siill a stout
healthy looking and well preserved
man , goodnatured and scatters sun
shine among his friends and neigh
bors in his journey through life.
It gives us pleasure to meet these

Thomas P. Hudson called on us
last week and made a pleasant vis
it. He is one of the pioneer Mis
souri settlers in the Spark's settle
ment.
John Dambly has put up a neat
dwelling on the lot he recently
j purchased of L. C. Sparks , that
( was formerly owned by Hans Ul-
rick , and has moved into it.
"Next let's celebrate the Fourth
of July and show the teachers a
'warm time. There'll be a lot of
them going home if we don't show
them that Valentine is alive. Don't
everybody speak first but some
body ought to say something.
Report of school district No. 46
for month beginning April 6 , and
ending May. 1 , 1903. Number of
days taught , 20 ; number of pupils
enrolled , 5 ; number of visitors , 2 ;

G. AV. Hervcy , now an editor
of the Nebraska Farmer and who
formerly had charge of the agri
cultural department of the "World-
Herald fv > r 12 years , was up last
week to turn over his ranch near
Crookston to J. F. Keller , of Uni
versity Place , Lincoln , Nebr. Mr.
Keller has bought the ranch com
plete and Mr. Hervey is out of the
stock business in Cherry county.
We enjoyed a pleasant visit from
Mr. Hervcy last Saturday while
he was in our city and he tells us
that Mr. Keller will make improve
ments and build a good stone dwell

for commencement.
The school is very quiet today.
It must be because the boys are
gone.

State Supt. Fowler announces
the following1 instructors for the
Valentine Junior Normal : Supt.
G. A. Gregory , of Crete ; Supt. E.
E. Magce , of Fairmont ; and R. H.
Watson , of Valentine , also , Miss
Eleanor Lally , of Lincoln , will
give instruction in methods and
conduct a model school. , Perhaps
