McP , BALDWIN' , Official in Charge , David Hancock was in town dur ing the past week. Mrs. L. N. Layport has been quite sick the past week. Pete DeCory was on our streets Monday looking as cheerful as is usual with him. Win. Lee , of Brownlee , was do ing business at the land office a couple of days this week. S. Q. Spain and son-in-law , Chas. Pate , were in town this week hauling freight to Kennedy. The morning subject at the M. E. church next Sunday will be , "Hindered in the Christian Life. " Evening , "Responsibility of Lead ers. Mrs. Lizzie Harris will be in Valentine May 1st with a stock of millinery goods , which will be opened at Mrs. Munson's dress making rooms on the east side of Main street. Wm. Heelan and Wencel Schrum of Arabia , called at this office last Saturday while in town making inal proof on land for Mr. Heelan and Ed Johnson. We printed some nice envelopes for Mr. Heelan with his name , address and stock brand. Tuesday1 there was a little sleet on the sidewalks and on open stair ways. Dr. Dailey started to walk doWn his stairway , but .found slid- ng so easy that he slid down part of the way and thinks he is some iliead of the game for having saved so many steps and without effort , not being hnrt in the least. A. B. McAlevy and wife were in sown this week transacting busi ness with our merchants , and Mr. AIcAlevy made this office a pleasant - i ant visit and got I. M. Rice to write up some insurance on I-iis dwelling and household goods. They , live about a mile from the mouth of the Boardman on the land he recently purchased from Mr. Beekly. H. W. Caton and wife came down from their home at Stearns , S. D. , to visit at the home of Judge Townc , Mrs. Caton's parents , Mon day of this week. Mr. Caton call ed at our office and says that they are getting along nicely and that their cattle wintered as well as usual , though this has been the liardest winter that he has put in , in Nebraska. Dr. Lauren Jones , of Gordon , made us a pleasant visit while in town as advertised last week. We consider Dr. Jones a thorough man , and anyone securing his services may feel that a specialist in his line lias done what science teaches can / be done , and if their case is within liis professional capacity , Dr. Jones will conscientiously discharge his duty. Try to sec him if you are in poor health. Mrs. Ida Ballard was brought buck from Iowa Sunday night to answer to the charge of mortgag ing cattle which could not be found. Mrs. Ballard i& the woman who was recently married to I. M. Jones , of this city , and run the Union hotel for several months. It is stated that Mrs. Ballard has been very careless in obtaining money and credit , which has been extend ed to her because of false repre sentation by her , and that she will now board for awhile with Sheriff Layporfc pending an investigation. Mark Cyphers has purchasnd a yearling Jersey bull from Prof. Hacckcr , of the Lincoln Experi ment Station. This is probably the only full blood Jersey from the famous Golden ] Lad family , from the Isle of Jersey , that is in the county. Monday night it rained. Sleet ed Tuesday. Snowed Tuesday night and Wednesday. The first part of the day looked like a Janu ary blizzard but was not very cold. The wind blew from the north and snow filled the air. About two inches of snow fell and drifted in places a couple of feet deep. W. H. Wilkinson and wife drove in from Kennedy Tuesday and were the guests of L. N. Layport and wife of this city. It has been some time since Mrs. Wilkinson has vis ited in our city and she found the weather 'quite severe. The snow storm which came up Tuesday night made things look like Christ mas time. We acknowledge a pleasant visit from Mr. Wilkinson. Mrs. Alice Furrey D > > a < l. Mrs. Alice Furrey , wife of John W. Furrey , died last Friday even ing of heart trouble , at their home on Cherry street in this city. Mrs. Furrey had gone down to the Post during the afternoon , Friday , and her husband , who is a teamster at the Post got in the buggy and came home with her after his work was done there. The family had gotten ready to retire and Mrs. Furrey had gone to bed. Mr. Fur rey had gone to another room to get a drink of water when he was ummoned hastily to the bedside of his wife who told him that she was fainting or dying.Drs. . Compton - ton and Lewis ivcre called immed iately and did what they could to re lieve her but to no avail. She died in about an hour from the time she was stricken with heart failure. A post mortem examination disclosed the fact that a callous growth around the heart had closed the valves and burst a vein , from which death re sulted. The funeral took place Sunday morning at 11 o'clock from the M. E. church , of which Mrs. Furrey was a member since last winter , having formerly belonged to the Dunkard church. Mrs. Furrey was born Dec. 14 , 1855 at Troy Grove , III. , was mar ried to John W. Furrey in Sept. 1ST5 , died April 24 , lUO.'J at the age of 47 years -4 months 10 days. Nine children and a husband sur vive the deceased. She was laid to rest in Mount Hope cemetery. THE DEMOCRAT extends sympa thy to the bereaved family. Educational Department. Sam takes charge of his -fathers ranch , while Kapp goes with his father to Indiana. Mary Gumbo w was a pleasant caller in the high school Thursday.
