There was considerable challeng
ing of votes at the city election.
Many were challenged on each
side who had a perfect right to
vote but as the parties who were
in doubt were from Missouri and
had no other way of finding out
they took this plan of proceedure.
3t was knowing no friends and
fearing no enemies on the line of
duty that may have caused some
bitter feelings but we hope no one
will feel personally grieved.
The Republican of last week says
"Be honest and fair in what you
say , " and then goes on to say that
the petition candidates were in fav
or of gamblingQand law breaking
and says "in fact they and the ele
ment behind them have no stand
ing. ' ' A great many slurs are cast
by this would be reformer and
pious man , that should not be said
about people we meet in every day
life and find them in everyway to
be fair and honorable men. There
is a time coming when the same
man who says "they and the ele
ment behind them have no stand
ing" will regret using such words
about a neighbor , a fellow citizen and
men of more than his own popular
ity. There is no call for such
words. There was neither reason
nor good judgement used in the
attack upon three of Valentine's
citizens , who are men of intelli
gence , honor and good standing ,
are recognized to be so' by every
body. It was not merely a lack
of courtesy but. was an insult to
these three men , their families and
their friends who associate with
them. It is mean and despicable
to thus attempt to besmirch the
reputation of men who have lived
among us for years and who have
always borne good reputations.

to get out on time was the result
of the physical demoralization of

the last word "widow , " and the

The house of John Shaughnessy
and wife caught fire last Saturday
morning about 2:30 : o'clock while
the occoupants .were asleep and
nearly the whole of the upper story
was burned before it could be put
out. The neighbors gathered at
the fire signal which was tele
phoned down town by Judge Wal-
cott who lives across the street
from the Shaughnessy building ,
and soon had the water pouring
onto the flames in a bucket bri
gade and the fire department get
ting out with the hose cart. The
fire was extinguished before it
burned through to the first story
but the neighbors had already car
ried the household goods out into
the yard. Mr. Shaughnessy claims
he was awakened by smote in the
room down stairs and going out
side saw the roof on fire near the
chimney. He at once gave the
alarm and aroused the neighbors
who came running with willing
hands to help. Prompt action
saved the biggest part of the buil
ding and household goods. ' The
building was insured in the Ger
man Mntual Fire Ins. Co. , of Om
aha , which is represented here by
their agent I. M. Eice , who after
viewing the fire , reported to the
Insurance Company at once. The
Secretary and adjuster , C. W.
Hicks arrived yesterday morning
and speedily adjusted the loss by
hiring Gus Carlson the carpenter
and contractor to figure the cost
of rebuilding the house to make it
just as good as it was before the
fire.
