John Cordia spent a couple of days in town the past week. I. C. Stotts and Robert Gillaspie were down from Cody Friday. Will Morgareidge was down from Merriman last Saturday. Mrs. Mollie Simmons , the Ch er- ry county author , was in the city Saturday the guest of J. A. Horn- back. John Porath was in town Tues day on business and made us a call. Notice the change in his ad this week. John Heelan , of Arabia , was in the city Tuesday transacting busi ness and laying in supplies for his ranch. He made this office a visit while in town. The Hahn-Parke Quartette will be with us Monday , March 2nd ( if the date is not changed. ) This will be one of the best of the series of entertainments. Tell your friends .to come. * i Mrs. James Smith and daughter Esther , called on us this week while in town to get some garden seeds fromthe supply that was sent us ironi the agricultural de partment of the government. A letter from TV. P. Hunt , for merly of thisplace , but now a 'druggist in Joplin , Mo. , encloses a dollar on subscription. " TVe also received a copy of the paper boom ing that country on account of its lead deposits. .Herman Eiege was in Tuesday and paid for a year's subscription -to the DEMOCRAT. Mr. Eiege raised 1700 bushels of corn and still has a 1000 bushels that he will sell but is waiting for a better price. The price offered now for corn we hear is 35c. * Ed Satterleo , the Nenzel mer chant , and Albert Nenzel were in town last week. Mr. Nenzel is about to sell his ranch near ! Nen zel and will move to Canada in case he sells. We enjoyed a pleasant visit , from Mr. Nenzel and his descript ion of the Saskatchewan country. The Fort Mobrara Minstrels have added another grand attract ion to their show , "The Queen City Quartette , " composed of the following songsters : Hom'er Gala way , Bass ; Byron L. Wilson , soprano ; Benjiman Lam bert , baritone ; Win. Lee , tenor , Wm. Tivis , soloist. X. M. Cunningham has gone to his home in Ind. for a visit of a month or two. During his stay here he has been gentlemanly in conduct and is an efficient official , and has been faithful in his work. ' We wish him a good time. Dur- his absence Harry Geren , of Col umbus , Ojiio , will have charge of the weather bureau office. Wm. Allen , from down the river called Monday while in town to" get a package of seeds. There's a lot of seeds here and we don't make garden. Each package con tains small packages of radish , let- tune , watermelon , tomato and beet. Wells , of Minneap olis , conducted services at St. John's Episcopal church last Sun day evening. Frank Brayton has had his resi dence moved from Cherry street to the vacant lot east of D. E. Sherman's. E. W. Webb's family arrived in Valentine last week and have moved into the Steclc house , re cently purchased by Mr. Webb. Gus Anderson , of Cody , came down yesterday to attend the auc tion of school land at the county treasurer's office by the commis sioner of public lands and build ings. ings.A A number of our subscribers , seeing our notice of auction of school land , at the county treas urer's office , February 11 , availed themselves of the opportunity of coming to town to be in attendance at the auction. Sometimes one is sue of this paper is worth all you pay for the paper in several years. Mrs. J. T. Kief and daughter , Bernice , called at our office Tues day and informed us that their pa per had not been received regular ly at Arabia the past three or four weeks. It is mailed from this of fice Thursdays and should be found at the Arabia postoffice , but possi bly there has been a mistake of some kind. We will look uj > our side of the deal and hope there will be no further cause for complaint. E. R. Barnes called at our office while in town paying up taxes and left us a couple of plunks on sub scription. Mr. Barnes lives on : ke Snake , south of Cody , and is luite successful in raising cattle md horses. He sold a thousand lollars worth of horses last spring md has a lot more and a good junch of cattle. Mr. Barnes is mterprising and does his own > vork with the help of his boy and lis profits are clear. Roy Brown has taken up school lutics with the 7th grade. After a week's illness Nellie Barber returned to school duties Monday. Berth Harve5T has returned to icr school duties after a week's : ibsence. Frank Fischer , Chas. Brown and Stella Spratt were among the ab sentees this week. Arthur Campbell and Wallace- McDonald were absent Monday on iccount of illness. "Gypsy Breyton" is in great lemand by the school pupils. Will ihose who succeed in getting it * please return it as soon as possible ind give the others a chance to -ead it ? Mabel Spratt has turned in her Dooks and quit school. The 9th jrade Started the term with about J5 pupils and was then the largest jrade , but it is gradually dwind- ing away. Several of the seats on the 9th nade side have been changed this , veek.
