Our town will probably goiuabodv to Sparks to the old settlers Reunion. Most of the teachers left for their homes Saturday ni ht , Sunday and Monday. Mrs. Elden Sparks visited friends in our city several days last week and returned to her home in Cody Satur day evening. Claud Reece and his sister 31rs. Yenks were in town Tuesday visiting their mother and doing business with our merchants. W. C.White becomes a reader of THE VALENTINE DEMOCRAT this week. We also have several other new subscribers. Woodruff Bali is enjoying a visit with his parents and sister who ar- rived here a few days i ago from their home in Chicago. Miss Katherine Jessen remained over Sunday for a visit with friends in Valentine and returned to her home near Merriman Monday. Mrs. Andrew Morey who has been visiting at the home of her brother- in-law Abijah Morey returned to her home in Iowa Tuesday morning. W. C. Shattuck our County Treas urer went up to his ranch near Mer- riman the iirst of the week to look after things there for a few days , vVm. Wilson of Georgia came down on business last Friday and was so busy we didn't get to talk with him very much though he generally pays us a visit. i Collett and Martin will have their early fall opening- Millinery Satur day in which they will have on exhi bition the latest styles for ladies and childrens wear. Commissioners Dist. No. 2 should hold a convention about the middle of next month somewhere in their district that would be the most suita ble place to nominate a commissioner. Miss Anna Bowen came down from Rosebud Agency Monday and is visit ing her sister Mrs. M. Fitzgerald , She will go to Sparks and attend tie Old Settlers Picnic Thursday aid Friday. , T. W. Searson of Wahoo W. H , Gardner of Auburn and Miss O'Con- ner of Minneapolis Instructors in the Teacher's Institute departed for their homes Saturday morning after the close of the Institute. W. A. Parker and son Don came up last Saturday from Woodlake to transact business matters with our county officials and see our town grow , Mr. Parker missed the train and stayed over until Sunday morn ing. In the absence of Rev. Cumbow the M. E. pulpit was filled last Sunday morning by Father Holsclaw in the evening the Junior League gave a missionary program which was lis * tened to by a large and appreciath e audience. Jas. White and wife came down from the Reservation last Friday ann stayed in a couple of days. Mr. White is working for Quigley Hancock and Heine taking care of their herds of cattle on the Reservation this suma mtr instead of working for R. W. v Dunn as we stated a couple of weeks fl ajro. ay W. D. Morgareidge and family de E parted Monday Aug 18 for Moscow C Idaho where he expects to make his L future home. We recommend these t people to the people of Moscow as 1 1t being honorable and trustworthy. t They bear the good will of our people j here and we wish them success in their new home. Mrs. Nortbrup and daughter of Lowden , Iowa , are here since Satur day night the I6th inst visiting their son and brother , our popular station agent for the F. E & M. V. , J. C. Northrup. Mrs. Northrup will go up to Hermosa to see her son V. A. be fore returning to her home. Miss Northrup will probably remain here the winter , Dr. Lewis reports a daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Perry Veach last Sunday * . . The Elkhom is laying' seventy-two pound rails in the neighborhood of O'Neill. Charles Holsclaw is in the city vis iting his grandfather S , W. Holsclaw and other relatives. M. Jelly , of Sparks has the honor of making the first deposit in the new First National bank of Valentine. Harry Hilsinger has purchased the building formerly occupied by Webb's cigar factory and moved it away. W. A , Parker , of Wood Lake , was in town Saturday and called at these headquarters. His son Don accom panied him. Rev. Cumbow is spending a couple of weeks out at Marsh Lake where he is putting up the hay on his home stead and the land he bought from Ed Holsclaw. The Valentine teachers Institute visited the DEMOCRAT office last Thursday in a body to witness the op eration of our printing press in print ing the paper , Mrs. Hobbs and family , of Simeon , desire to thank their friends at Val entine and Simeon who rendered as sistance during the rerent illness of tbeir son and brother. Mell and Maud Jeffries , Alta Starr , A. P. Webb , Charley and Mary Hoi- claw went out to the Jakes Sunday or an outing and to see who could catch the most Fish. An attempt has been made to as- assinate the Czar of Russia. Won der if the insurance companies place the occupation of czaring in the ex tra hazardous class. Harry Tucker , Tommy Watkins , Dr. Vrenenburg , J , T. Keeley and daughters Mamie and Winnie attend ed the dance at Arabia last Saturday night. A fine time is reported. One of the privates name not giv en who left Fort Niobrara for Ark. , last week , was badly cut on the wrist at Long Pine while assisting in trans ferring baggage and was left there in charge of a surgeon. Wm. Barnett received a five year sentence in Holt county last week for eloping witn a horse and some of his relatives who handled the truth too recklessly in their effort to establish an alibi will have a trial Jarer on for perjury. A Creek India'n in Indian territory toldchis wife she must not join a se cret society. She joined just the same and when she returned home from the lodge meeting he met her at the door and chopped her head off with an ax. The cure is no doubt ef fective but too strenuous to become popular. Twenty-five young mules were un loaded here last Friday for use down at Fort Niobrara , They are not yet educated to the use of the jerk line and there'll be some great times in store for the drivers for a while. We hear that there will be about a bund * red Pack mules brought to Fort Nic brara to winter as feed will becheai er bere than elsewhere. ' Theo. Williams , of South Bend , Ind. arrived last Friday night for a visit A with his cousin , Geo. Hardin. They met on the street Saturday morning andras they had not met for twenty Mr. Hardin failed years ) to recog * nize him. Mr. Williams is something of a joker and told Mr. Hardin that he "wanted him" and they went to the. shop where Mr. Williams revealed his identity and Hardin admitted that the joke was on him. Died of Brights Disease Aug. 21 at 1 P. M. , 1902 at the city Hotel of this city Gilbert S. Hobbs. The deceased was born in Brown Co. 111. Apr.121865t In Apr. 1887 the family came west and settled at Simeon where he lived until the time of his death. A moth er , five brothers and a sister survive him. The decceased has not been in robust health for years and was brought to town to be doctored about a week previous to his death.
